Featured Scholarship Recipient – Heather Flessing, MS Accountancy

Image

I want to express how truly thankful I am for being selected as a recipient of the Russ and Charlotte Lesser Family Accountancy Scholarship.  It is wonderful that there are alumni who are willing to help students who wish to pursue the accounting profession.  This scholarship will help me to pay off part of my tuition and buy books for this coming semester.  I am currently enrolled in the Masters of Science in Accountancy program and am expecting to graduate this coming summer.  I have been learning so much from my classes and am planning on taking the CPA exam after I graduate.  Though I have not yet decided which area of accounting I want to pursue with my degree, I feel that the MSA program at CSU Long Beach has definitely been preparing me to be an asset in whichever field I decide to enter.

Featured Alum – Feride Buyuran

Born and raised in Azerbaijan, Feride Buyuran received her undergraduate degree in English Philology and a graduate degree in English Literature from the University of Languages in her hometown Baku. Prior to moving to the United States 16 years ago, she worked as an editorial assistant at an English-language magazine focusing on the culture of Azerbaijan, and as a content creator and multilingual translator for a local technology company. Once in California, she decided to pursue a business degree in order to either start her own business or launch a career in international business. After graduating from Cal State Long Beach with an MBA degree, Feride worked as a marketing specialist and a project manager in several companies, while at the same time realizing her American dreams – writing a cookbook on the cuisine of her homeland, which, eventually changed and paved her career path.

Feride is now an award-winning cookbook author and speaker specializing in the cuisine of the Caucasus. Her self-published book, Pomegranate and Saffron: A Culinary Journey to Azerbaijan, is the first and only cookbook on Azerbaijani cuisine published in the U.S. The book is the winner of five awards, including Gourmand Best in the Word, Gourmand Cookbook Award – Best Eastern European Cookbook in U.S., Living Now Award, Indie Excellence Award, and Best Books Award.

Feride speaks on food, history and cultural topics at libraries and other public and private venues; her most recent lecture was at the Library of Congress in D.C. She has been widely featured in media (KCRW, Jerusalem Post, etc.). Her uniquely themed culture and dinner events and cooking classes highlight the diversity and vibrancy of the Caucasus cuisine and culture. In July, Feride will lead her very first Cuisine and Culture Tour to Azerbaijan and the neighboring Georgia and she already looks forward to more tours in the future.

Feride cherishes the time she spent at Cal State Long Beach and believes the experiences she gained there have helped her tremendously in every step of her career. Because of CSULB, she fell in love with Long Beach and now her, her husband, along with their two kids, and two dogs, call it home.

We hope to admit the first Online MBA cohort in spring of 2019! The spring application period opens August 1 and runs through October 1 for international students and November 1 for domestic students.

We also have two new Specialized Masters degrees coming fall 2019. We will offer a one year MS in Finance degree designed to equip students with the knowledge needed for CFA certification. We also plan to offer a two year MS in Marketing degree program, designed to provide students with advanced and highly demanded training in current marketing tools, marketing research, forecasting and statistical and analytical skills. The fall 2019 admission period will open October 1 2018 and run through April 1 for international students and June 1 for domestic students.

Finally, we plan to offer a Blended MS Accountancy program that will make the transition from an undergraduate degree in Accountancy to an MS in Accountancy even smother. New Blended BS Business Administration/ MS in Accountancy

The College of Business Administration announces its new blended Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Master of Science in Accountancy program. This blended BS/MS program is now available to promising students seeking a career in public accountancy. With this new program, CSU Long Beach students now have the fastest possible path to meeting the 150-hour CPA licensure requirements, while earning both BSBA and MSA degrees in five years or less (three years for incoming transfer students).

Students may apply to the blended BSBA/MSA program as undergraduates. At the end of the first academic semester in which they earn at least 120 semester hours, and meet all required lower division general education courses, they automatically move to graduate status to complete the MSA degree. The program offers a unique opportunity for high-performing undergraduate students to achieve important educational goals and start their careers in public accounting earlier. Students in the blended program also have access to many of the support services offered to our graduate students.
