The Master of Science in Finance (MSF) program is a 30-semester-unit, 12-month program that will provide students with knowledge and skills in various finance areas including corporate finance and investments. Aligned with the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) curriculum, the MSF program will engage students in analyzing financial issues that are of interest to global corporations, financial institutions and international investors and equip the students with the knowledge needed for CFA certification. The purpose of the MSF program is to graduate students who are proficient in examining current financial issues, exploring feasible financial strategies, and applying relevant financial knowledge and analytical models that can help corporations, financial institutions and investors achieve optimal outcomes and solutions from a global perspective.

What is included?

Orientation

Students are required to participate in a two-day orientation at a downtown Long Beach Marriott Courtyard. The focus of the orientation is to prepare the student to work in teams, master the Harvard case discussion method, learn to use Excel, and begin the preparation for their career post-graduation. During the orientation, students get to know faculty, fellow students and alumni of the program and begin to work as teams. The orientation is included in the cost of the program.

Career Services

Career planning and management are an important benefit of the MSF program. Students begin their career planning after they have been admitted and support continues for up to a year after graduation.  Students work with a career advisor on identifying career goals and developing a job search strategy, as well as resume writing, interviewing, and other important career skills.

Curriculum

The CFA designation provides an excellent opportunity for people working in financial services to advance their careers. Top employers of CFA charter holders are, for instance, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, Barclays, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs. A list of detailed class descriptions is available in the CSULB Catalog. ​The culminating experience of the MSF program is a written comprehensive exam offered after the student’s successful completion of the required 10 courses. The comprehensive exam is designed to evaluate the student's comprehensive knowledge of various subjects in finance. The comprehensive exam is given annually during the period after Summer Session III and before the fall semester. The exam lasts three hours and a passing grade is needed to satisfy the final requirement for graduation from the MSF program.

Student Managed Investment Fund - SMIF

The CSULB Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) Program includes three separate portfolios totaling more than half a million dollars that the SMIF students manage in a team-oriented, presentation-intensive environment. The quality of the CSULB SMIF Program is reflected in the success of its alumni, a number of whom have gone on to work at prestigious investment firms, including Goldman Sachs, PIMCO, Wilshire Associates, Western Asset Management, and the Capital Group

Program Requirements

Applicants are expected to possess an undergradaute degree in Finance, or remedy their deficiency by taking FIN 501:Financial Management Concepts or the equivalent at an AACSB-accredited school with a B or better prior to admission.  Students must submit a transcript and class syllabus to the program manager for verification.

Benefits

Integrated and Well Sequenced Curriculum: The program includes CFA concepts that are integrated into both curriculum and exams.

Location:  Many international firms such as Toyota and Hyundai have expanded their operations in Southern California. The CFA Society of Los Angeles and the CFA Society of Orange County have about 2,000 and 400 active members.

What is the cost of the MS Finance Program?

Approximately $19,000 for California Residents and appromixmately $31,000 for Non-California Residents and International students.  See Program Costs for more information.

Will applicants be interviewed?

Applicants will not be interviewed; however, a Video Statement of Purpose is required for the Admissions application.

Can I waive courses in CSULB’s MSF program if they are similar to coursework taken elsewhere?

No. Students must take all assigned courses to successfully complete the MSF program. 

Do you require work experience?

The program does not require work experience.
