Summer Construction Projects

Beach Building Services is busy with summer construction projects throughout campus (see map). Some of the bigger projects include the Psychology Curtainwall and Parking Lot E12.  The Psychology Curtainwall project will replace the external glazing system of the buildings and is expected to occur July 2019 through January 2020.  Parking Lot G-12 will be partially closed for re-striping the weeks of July 1 and July 8. The first portion of the work will be done on the NORTH side and be completed from July 1-July 3, 2019. During this time the SOUTH section of the lot will remain open. The second round of repainting will include the SOUTH section which will be completed July 8-July 11, 2019, with the NORTH side remaining open.

Parking Program Changes Fall 2019

Throughout spring of 2019, Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) shared its financial realities with the campus through a series of “Parking Road Show” presentations.  At that time, PTS discussed how the university’s transportation budget has been subsidizing a wide variety of programs that go beyond maintaining parking lots and structures such as the Long Beach Transit TAP program, campus shuttles, EV chargers and other sustainable transportation initiatives.  PTS also discussed the importance of creating a self-sustaining financial model that will allow it to maintain these important programs for students, faculty and staff in the future.  A thorough and thoughtful planning process led to the introduction of a modified fee schedule across all of our transportation programs instead of a significant fee increase to a single program, which will minimize the impact to any one group of users.  We understand these changes may create challenges, especially for students.  In response to these concerns, a hardship fee waiver process is being developed for the Long Beach Transit and shuttle programs. The fee waiver will be available to students in need prior to the fall semester.

The Shark Lab Debuts “Shark Shacks” Summer 2019

Every week this Summer, the Shark Lab is hosting Shark Shacks at various beaches along Southern California to help build an appreciation for sharks by reducing fear and informing the public about other marine life they may encounter at the beach as well. The tents will have information and activities for all ages. Keep an eye out for a tent near your local beach’s pier and stop by to say hi!

Potential Scammers Targeting CalPERS Members

The Benefits Services Department is aware of multiple attempts to solicit personal information from our staff/faculty members by individuals who claim to work on behalf of CalPERS. Most of these requests have come via email. We are working closely with Information Technology Services to screen out these emails, but some will inevitably get through despite their diligence.

Please be aware that CalPERS does not solicit third parties to act on their behalf to offer financial planning or other services. In addition, CalPERS employees will only meet with employees at their regional offices or at official CalPERS events. They will never offer to meet with you at your office, at a restaurant, or at your home. 

If you come into contact with suspicious individuals or emails claiming to represent CalPERS and asking for your personal information, do not provide any personal information, and report the activity as soon as possible to Benefits Services at benefits@csulb.edu or the CalPERS Information Security Office

Access Your W-2 Forms and Printable Copies of Pay Stubs Online at Cal Employee Connect

The State Controller’s Office (SCO) has introduced a new portal called Cal Employee Connect (CEC) that provides easy online access to both your W-2 forms and your paystubs.  The portal can be accessed on campus only at Cal Employee Connect (CEC). Simply follow the prompts and be sure to have your CSULB email and a pay stub issued within the last six months. Any issues with the application can be sent to connecthelp@sco.ca.gov. Additionally, the State Controller’s Office is looking for feedback on the new program which can be emailed to connectfeedback@sco.ca.gov.

New Assistant Vice President for Financial Management, Malia Freund

In her new role, Malia will oversee Procurement, Risk Management, Contractual Services, CMS Finance, Financial Management Information Systems (FMIS) and all HR functions for Financial Management. She has over 20 years of management experience in the airline industry and has served in her current position as Director of Procurement & Contractual Services for five years. Malia currently serves as Vice-President for the Chief Procurement Officers Association (CPOA) and served on several sub-committees for CPOA which involved creating centers of excellence in Procurement. She has also been a member of the Sustainability Team working in collaboration with the Chancellor’s Office.
