Position: Assistant Professor of Design (Human -Centered)

Effective Date: August 17, 2020 (Fall Semester)

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

The Assistant Professor of Design (Human-Centered), complementing the ‘duties’ listed below, will serve the graduate MA_HXDI Mission: Creating value through creating experiences, the graduate Human Experience Design Interactions (HXDI) program at CSULB takes a bold approach to developing systems of strategic solutions by embracing diverse voices and leveraging the innovation potential of interdisciplinary teams engaged in a rigorous, project-driven, human-centered design process. The HXDI program provides the tools for future design leaders to drive change while navigating the complexities of a hybrid human/technological world.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in Interaction Design, Design for Human Factors, Industrial Design, Human Computer Interaction Design, Experience Design, Architecture, Interior Design other relevant advanced degrees in Design, Visual Communications or closely related field 
  • Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the degree by August 1, 2020
  • Demonstrated high-level field experience developing human-centered work addressing complex issues of national and /or international relevance
  • Record of quality teaching at the college-level in design courses that are both relevant and engaging to a diverse student body
  • Demonstrated current technical proficiency across industry-relevant hardware, software, and communication platforms
  • Demonstrated human-centered experience creating process-driven, research-based, human-centered, interactive solutions to a range of design challenges
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in implementing human-centered design practices for enterprise development and/or entrepreneurship
  • Demonstrated experience in one of the following:
    UX design, Internet of Things, Game Design, Cross-Media Design, Wearables, Prototyping, Cross-Realities (XR), and Design of Immersive Environments.
  • Demonstrated on-going engagement in the field, interdisciplinary collaboration, and knowledge of current and future design trends
  • Demonstration of a design-as-service approach to human-centered design work
  • Evidence of design-related peer-reviewed research, projects, or exhibitions
  • Demonstrated excellence in the field of design

Duties:

  • Teach foundation, intermediate, advanced and graduate design courses including but not limited to those with a focus on Human-Centered Design. Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.
  • Teach strategies, processes, and tools to develop a wide range of design solutions leveraging the data and technologies of human experience
  • Develop and improve on innovative curriculum in collaboration with interdisciplinary and the department’s faculty members
  • Advise students and engage in student activities
  • Develop collaborative projects with partners in industry and community
  • Serve on Graduate Committees
  • Assist in identifying and recruiting part-time faculty as needed
  • Assist in class scheduling for HXDI courses
  • Engage in and produce design-related peer-reviewed research, scholarly and creative activities leading to publications and presentations
  • Develop a consistent, active record of engagement in the field of design and active participation in appropriate professional organizations
  • Participate in service to the department, college, university, and community
