Certificate Programs

Currently enrolled undergraduate students may earn a certificate in conjunction with their bachelor’s degree. Consult with the undergraduate advisor to review your current status and discuss adding the certificate to your program. Currently enrolled graduate students may earn a certificate in conjunction with their Master’s degree. Students not currently enrolled at CSULB and who have an undergraduate degree may earn a post-baccalaureate certificate. What is Geographic Information Science?
This program offers specialized training in applied and theoretical geospatial techniques, including geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and cartography. The program is designed to provide experience in quantitative spatial analysis through the use of geographic information systems, working with remotely sensed imagery and field-derived data, and effective communication through maps. The certificate serves as a supplement to standard degree programs. It provides essential training for those seeking careers in the geospatial technologies in both the public and private sector.

Undergraduate Students

Post- baccalaureate students

Currently enrolled graduate students may earn the certificate in conjunction with their Master’s degree. Consult with your program advisor and the certificate advisor to review your current status and discuss adding the certificate to your program. Students not currently enrolled at CSULB may apply to the program as a post-baccalaureate student. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required

Admission guidelines for post-baccalaureate students.

Application deadlines:

  • Spring admission: November 1st of the prior year
  • Fall admission: June 1st

Requirements for the Certificate in Geographic Information Sciences

  • a bachelor’s degree, which may be earned concurrently;
  • consultation with the certificate advisor in the Geography Department;
  • satisfactory completion of prerequisites: GEOG 200, 280 and 380;
  • a minimum of 23 UNITS of upper division coursework. See the current catalog for applicable courses.

What is Urbans Studies?
Urban Studies is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that complements degree programs in Geography, Anthropology, Economics, Sociology, History, Environmental Science and Policy, as well as many other Liberal Arts and Health and Human Service disciplines.
