International Trips

At the end of their program, SMBA students visit a city that showcases current trends in sustainability and that offers opportunities for collaboration with local businesses. Students have visited cities in Africa, Europe and South America.  

  • Climate KIC – visited the suburb of Nordhavn which is a net zero carbon residential zone. 
  • City of Copenhagen 2025 Energy Plan – learned about the comprehensive energy plan that the city of Copenhagen has created and committed to become a net zero carbon city by 2025.
  • LeaderLab and GehlPeople – one of our MBA teams worked on a project to develop a case study from California on how to create urban agriculture in large cities.  One of the goals of this strategy is to encourage eating locally sourced and healthy foods. 
  • Maersk Shipping Company –visited the Sustainability Division of Maersk shipping to learn about their sustainability practices around the world. 
  • Vestas Wind Turbine – this is the largest wind turbine manufacturer in the world.  Learned how they integrated human rights and environmental issues into their business practices both in Denmark and around the world.

  • Collaborated through panel discussions, speakers, and site visits with MS students at the SRH in Berlin
  • BMW – motorcycle plant with a special focus on the sustainability strategies that BMW has integrated into their production plant.
  • City of Feldheim – visit to a net zero carbon village that uses all of the energy to run the village based on its production of alternative energy sources such as biofuels, wind turbines, and solar panels.
  • EUREF campus –research incubator with focus on different technologies around alternative energy and how they are used in Germany compared to how we use them in the U.S. 
  • Lecture on healthcare in Germany and the EU.  We learned how sustainability strategies are being integrated into the healthcare industry.

  • Visited the World Expo 2015 in Milan to learn about sustainability globally
  • Increased business knowledge with organizational visits to small entrepreneurial businesses focused on sustainability such as AlterEquo, Tabarrini Winery, APCO Foods, Ococco Coconut Water as well as larger companies such as Cisco-Europe.
  • Focus of these visits was to learn about their sustainability strategies within the EU and Italian legal/regulatory frameworks, business environment, consumer trends, etc.

  • Took part in learning activities through presentations and site visit to Syngenta.
  • Experienced sustainable art through the innovative Factum Arte organization.

  • Increased business knowledge through interactions with executives at Renova, the largest paper company in Portugal. We learned about their sustainability practices around using recycled paper pulp as well as their internal business practices.
  • Comparative case analysis of sustainability strategies used at the Port of Lisbon and the Port of Long Beach

  • Experienced an afternoon of trading on the Moroccan stock exchange
  • Learned about the sustainable practices of the world’s largest producer of argan oil (Moroccan oil)
  • Nexan wires, a major cable wire producer – owned by a French company and learned about outsourcing as a sustainability strategy for a global company.

  • Gained insights into sustainable business practices through corporate visits to Algapo (largest producer of consumer products in LA)
  • Learned about environmental initiatives through Greenpeace – Argentina
  • Visited the Volkswagen production plant to learn about their sustainability practices in Argentina.
