Position: Associate Professor of American Indian Studies
Effective Date: August 17, 2021 (Fall Semester)

- Ph.D. or Ed.D. with a focus on American Indian Studies. Candidates possessing terminal degrees in American Indian Studies, Education, Indigenous Studies, Anthropology, History, English, American Studies, or any other academic discipline in the College of Liberal Arts are encouraged to apply.

- Evidence of excellence of teaching full-time at the college level.
- Demonstrated evidence of research and publication record commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor
- Evidence of successful scholarly and creative development and sustained publication or exhibition.
- Evidence of or potential for successful academic leadership in the American Indian Studies Program.
- Demonstrated commitment to working community-based participatory research, community-engaged service learning, and tribally-defined research needs.
- Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population
Ideal candidate would be a Culturally Competent Content Specialist who can bring both a current theoretical and academic understanding of American Indian Studies (AIS) as well as cultural intelligence, experiences and competence gained from actual lived experience in the American Indian community(s) who are the subject of the candidate’s scholarly and/or creative activities and the courses taught and developed in AIS.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching courses in American Indian, Native American, First Nations or Indigenous Studies at the university/college level.
- Experience of or potential for successful teaching comparative Ethnic Studies courses including Native Americans, African Americans, Latino/a/x and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States.
- Ability to teach critical methods and approaches.
- Potential for developing campus-wide interdisciplinary links with programs and departments.
- Grant writing and grant management.
- Demonstrated history of working with American Indian communities, organizations, non-profits, programs, Tribes/Tribal Nations. We are particularly interested in candidates with scholarly and/or creative expertise with urban American Indians in California and California Indians.
- Experience/expertise with NAGPRA and/or indigenous maritime traditions.
This is a general position in the American Indian Studies Program with a focus on assisting in the implementation of courses that will meet the new Ethnic Studies General Education requirement. Service is primarily located in American Indian Studies.
- Teach lower and upper division courses per semester, in American Indian Studies (AIS) including comparative courses, surveys, special topics courses, and other core courses within the AIS program. (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.)
- Implement AIS courses and collaborate with Africana Studies, Asian American Studies and Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies to support existing courses and develop new courses that satisfy the CSU Ethnic Studies General Education requirement which will go into effect Fall 2021.
- Participate in curriculum development and AIS Program activities.
- Provide program, college, and university level service to support the Program in American Indian Studies.
- Maintain an active and focused scholarly and/or creative agenda leading to conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, grant writing and exhibitions as appropriate to terminal degree.
- Advise and mentor students.

The American Indian Studies Program at CSULB is the oldest American Indian Studies Program in the CSU. Located on the ancient Gabrielino-Tongva village and sacred site of Puvungna, CSULB is the only University in the United States to have reburied the indigenous people of the land on a university campus. The first reburial of one Gabrielino-Tongva ancestor was in 1979 and the second reburial under NAGPRA, took place in 2016 with almost one-hundred human remains reburied. In addition to our partnership with the California Indian community, CSULB also serves one of the largest urban American Indian communities in the United States. leaders in the Urban American Indian Community developed and have supported the Annual CSULB Pow Wow for the past fifty years. The Pow Wow is a public event and the oldest and largest continuous student- sponsored event on upper campus attracting over six thousand people to CSULB each year. A section of lower campus is an active ceremonial site and gathering place for California Indian people that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These events on lower campus, although numerous, are generally private events not intended for the general public in contrast to the Annual Pow Wow. Candidates who are interested in this balance of serving California Indians and urban American Indians in California are highly encouraged to apply for this position.
