Powering the Discovery, Access, and Organization of Knowledge

The Technical Services Department at University Library plays a vital behind‑the‑scenes role in ensuring that students, faculty, and staff can easily discover, access, and use the library’s rich collections. While much of our work is not obvious to the public, it is foundational to every library service, from browsing OneSearch to accessing e‑resources and finding the right materials on the shelves. The University Library’s ability to deliver responsive, user‑focused services relies on the accuracy, consistency, and expertise provided by Technical Services staff.

What We Do

  • Acquiring the Library's Collections
    • Our team purchases books, journals, streaming media, electronic databases, and other resources. We ensure these materials are accurately described, discoverable, and accessible in OneSearch and other points of access.
  • Metadata Services
    • Through descriptive cataloging, classification, and authority control, we provide the structured information that enables users to search effectively and navigate the library’s holdings with confidence. Our work ensures that materials are findable today and as technology and metadata standards evolve.
  • Processing Materials
    • Before materials reach the shelves or appear online, our staff handles the physical and digital preparation required for usability. This includes labeling, barcoding, and quality control of digital records. These workflows ensure that every item, print or digital, is ready for use by the university community.
  • Electronic Resources Management
    • The department manages the lifecycle of electronic resources, including subscription databases, online journals, and ebooks. We handle licensing, activation, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance to ensure seamless access for the campus community. Every time you open a digital subscription article or stream paid media, our team helped make that possible.
