Upcoming Colloquium
Studying strongly correlated systems with AI
Dr. Eduardo Ibarra Garcia Padilla, Harvey Mudd College
September 22, 2025
11:00am in HSCI-102

Have you ever wondered why, since everything is made up of atoms, only some materials are magnetic? Why are some good conductors or insulators? These are some of the questions condensed matter physicists, like me, try to answer. In this talk I will focus on a simple, yet effective, model to understand certain types of materials where electrons interact strongly with each other. I'll talk about how we can create these models in the lab through experiments, as well as how we can investigate them using machine learning and generative AI.

About the Colloquium
The Colloquium is a unique opportunity for students to learn about new developments in physics and what physicists do after they graduate. Hosted by the Physics and Astronomy Department at California State University, Long Beach, the weekly meetings invite guests from universities, research laboratories, and industry to present and discuss current topics in physics. All students are encouraged to attend for a well-rounded experience and training in physics.
