CNSM Community Conversations lift up the many voices in our College community to share stories of gratitude and growth.
Being thankful for something positive — big or small — can feel good. A simple gesture from a friend, loved one, classmate, or faculty can make a difference. A rewarding experience, such as discovering something new through a research project or earning an award or scholarship, can give a helpful boost when needed most.

What got you interested in doing student research at CSULB?
My friends were the main reason for me getting involved with research. They talked very well about their experiences in publishing and learning about chemistry, and how it has helped them [with] getting jobs and applying for graduate schools or med school.
How has being involved in that research lab changed your educational experience?
Being involved in research has helped me incredibly during my education by obtaining help and guidance from my research professor, and by being able to apply my chemistry knowledge. It also has helped me understand more about the classes I take, making me a better intuitive person when facing challenges.
What are your future plans, and how have your research experiences shaped them (or if your future plans shaped your research goals)?
My plans are to pursue a dental career and be able to open my own clinic. Research has been a great way to practice my manual dexterity skills which is a huge factor in the dental field since most of the 2 last two years of dental school are hands on labs. It is also a highlight of my resume and experience when applying for dental school, or laboratory jobs.
Anything else you want to say about your experiences, faculty and/or lab mates?
Lab research is a great way to make connections and build up skills for your future career. My lab mates and research professor make my lab experience very valuable and enjoyable since I can ask questions or ask for their help when making mistakes.
