Women’s History Month 2024

To kick-off Women’s History Month, College of Business Dean Solt shared about women who have inspired and mentored him along his journey and why Women’s History Month is important to highlight. Read his responses below.

The university is hosting a variety of events and workshops throughout March for Women’s History Month. We hope you will join us!

1. What woman/women have inspired or mentored you along your journey?

My mother gave me a strong foundation of “midwestern values” that include working hard, being respectful, lending a helping hand, being humble, doing the right thing, and being honest. I didn’t know how important these childhood lessons were until much later in life when I realized how these values helped me chart my course through life. She was also a sweet, happy woman who never had a bad thing to say about anyone, and this is another lesson that I try to implement.

Karen Gould, CSULB Provost and later President of Brooklyn College, hired me to be Dean of the College of Business, and she was a super Provost for our campus. She was a strong leader who was very engaged in promoting student success and in working with the colleges. During my first year at CSULB, she gave me one of the best lessons of my career as Dean. I was very unhappy about a distribution from one of the college’s endowment funds, and I sent a stinging, angry email to the VP involved voicing great displeasure. Within 15 minutes I received a phone call from Provost Gould’s assistant saying that I should be at the Provost’s office at 8:00 am the next day, and so I was. The meeting wasn’t long, and I was in my office about 20 minutes later. Provost Gould’s lesson was simple but powerful: do I want to be part of the problem or part of the solution? I learned immediately that how one communicates with others is crucial to resolving issues, and I still try to apply this lesson today. I’m not sure that my relationship with that VP ever recovered, but since then I have tried to be on the solution side not the problem side.

2. Why is Women's History Month important to highlight?

Across the college and university, I work with many women in leadership positions, faculty and staff positions, and student leadership positions, and we always focus on achieving goals, getting the job done, etc. I consider all of us to be part of the team that moves the university forward. However, women throughout our country have had to fight very hard to be recognized for their talents and contributions, not to mention fighting for equitable pay. I think the Women’s History Month is important because it recognizes that gender issues still exist in the workplace, and we all need to continue promoting equality among all of us and to providing a better future for women of all ages.

1. What woman/women have inspired or mentored you along your journey?
I’ve been married a long time, but my wife has always inspired me. As a nurse and clinical nurse specialist, she has held jobs of enormous responsibility while raising our children and dealing with me. We move ten times in twenty-five years, so she was constantly adjusting to new homes and new jobs.

2. Why is Women's History Month important to highlight?
It is always good to step back and stop taking people for granted.

1. What woman/women have inspired or mentored you along your journey?

"The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world." Many women have inspired and influenced me to become who I am today, but if I were to choose one, I would say it is my mom.

Born into a large family with eight siblings, my mom was the eldest but also the only one who pursued higher education while also assisting her mom in caring for the family. She became a reliable and esteemed accountant who was also passionate about playing bridge during lunch breaks.

What she said to me in my childhood continues to influence me today, such as "The eyes are lazy, but the hands are diligent" and "A woman must own a world larger than just her family, be it friends, career, or hobbies.”

My mom also introduced me to financial statements and cash flows. Her leadership in restructuring a struggling state-owned enterprise and assisting my uncle's small company underscored the crucial importance of accounting, taxation, and financial analysis in achieving business success. Believing that the solution to most problems, ranging from political development and technological advancement to social stability, lies in the realm of economy, I dedicated my studies and research to this field.

In 2017, my mom suffered a sudden cerebral hemorrhage and has remained in a vegetative state since her surgery. Over the past seven years, she has lain quietly in bed, initially completely immobile, gradually able to lift her eyelids, move her fingers, and raise her forearms, but without any verbal or interactive response to our calls. Two weeks ago, my mom finally and softly responded to her caregiver, 'Chi bao le' (饱了 - 'I'm full').

Before my mom's illness, I endured the sudden loss of my father and sister, a stark reminder of life's fragility. Despite her silence, my mother's resilience and greatness serve as constant inspiration to me. If I were to select one woman who has profoundly influenced my journey, it would unquestionably be my mother.

2. Why is Women's History Month important to highlight?

Women's History Month is important to highlight because it celebrates the contributions, achievements, and struggles of women throughout history. It provides an opportunity to recognize the often overlooked or marginalized roles that women have played in shaping societies, cultures, and economies worldwide.

Gender equity in the business field remains a pressing issue despite advancements in recent years. While progress has been made, women continue to face barriers such as unequal pay and pervasive gender biases.

Achieving gender equity is crucial not only for ethical reasons but also for maximizing economic potential. Research shows that diverse teams and leadership enhance innovation and drive better business outcomes.

Our potential knows no bounds. Don't allow others to dictate what we, as women, can or cannot do.

Embrace our strengths, pursue our passions, and defy the limitations imposed by others. Our determination and resilience pave the way for success.

1. What woman/women have inspired or mentored you along your journey?

I am continually struck by the fact that many of the most intelligent, hardworking, and dedicated individuals I know and collaborate with are women. Despite their remarkable contributions, women often receive insufficient recognition, particularly in the field of technology. In my current role as Director of MSIS, I have the privilege of collaborating with a diverse array of individuals from various offices and departments, including COB graduate business programs and CPACE. It's notable that the majority of these colleagues are women, and they consistently demonstrate exceptional intellect and commitment. Their tireless efforts are driven not by a desire for recognition but by a genuine dedication to serving students and advancing our shared goals. As we observe this month, let us seize the opportunity to celebrate and honor these remarkable women for their invaluable contributions. It's time to shine a spotlight on their talents and achievements, recognizing the pivotal role they play in our collective success.

2. Why is Women's History Month important to highlight?

I have been fortunate to be inspired and guided by several remarkable women in my life. Among them, three stand out: My Mother: Throughout her life, my mother has exemplified selflessness and resilience. Despite facing numerous challenges, she prioritized my brother's and my education above all else, even at the expense of her own comforts. Her unwavering belief in the power of generosity and kindness has left an indelible mark on me. She taught us the profound value of giving silently and without expectation, demonstrating that the true measure of wealth lies in our ability to uplift others. Dr. Julie Kendall: As my mentor in academia, Dr. Kendall has not only shaped my scholarly journey but also embodied the essence of humility and dedication. Despite her towering achievements in the field of Information Systems, she remains remarkably approachable and invested in the growth of her students. Her invaluable guidance and sage advice have been instrumental in my academic pursuits. I am endlessly inspired by her humility and work ethic, which serve as a beacon of excellence in my own endeavors. My Wife: The epitome of resilience and compassion, my wife has redefined the meaning of dedication through her tireless commitment to her students and her craft as an educator. Her unwavering passion for teaching and nurturing young minds has taught me that education is not merely a profession but a calling—an opportunity to shape the future generations. Her strength in the face of adversity has been a constant source of inspiration, instilling in me a newfound sense of determination. These extraordinary women have instilled in me the values of generosity, hard work, and humility, which I strive to embody each day. Their collective wisdom serves as a guiding light, shaping not only my personal and professional life but also the way I engage with the world around me.

1. What woman/women have inspired or mentored you along your journey?

Being a military spouse, I have been blessed to have met inspiring women from the East Coast all the way to now the West Coast from all different ages, cultures, countries and backgrounds! Throughout my professional journey, I have seen major changes over the last 20 years and personally know women breaking into (and killing it in!) typically male dominated careers such as firefighters, engineers, truck drivers, CEOs, software developers, construction workers, pilots, and doctors just to name a few. It's incredibly empowering to see women breaking barriers and excelling in traditionally male-dominated fields. They have shown multifaceted resilience, unwavering strength, and remarkable ability to surmount obstacles, whether personal or systemic, in the relentless pursuit of their aspirations. This encourages me to keep pushing boundaries and challenging stereotypes to pave the path for future generations. Their courage and achievements are truly inspiring!

2. Why is Women's History Month important to highlight?

Having a month dedicated to women is important for remembering and honoring the women pioneers who have had the courage to champion change and pave the way for gender equity here in the United States. From shattering glass ceilings to advocating tirelessly for equality and justice, women embody a spirit of courage and determination that ignites positive change. But, Women’s History Month is also call to women today to stand up and speak up because there is still much work to be done, especially in the workplace! So, let’s take this month to celebrate the contributions and achievements of the women who are committed to breaking down the gender inequities that still exist. The 2024 theme for Women's History Month is: “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion”. This year’s theme is essential to recognizing the women that are advocating for, and becoming the powerful forces behind, driving change through new legislation and corporate programs aimed at addressing ongoing the injustices to promote equity, diversity and inclusion in society.

1. What woman/women have inspired or mentored you along your journey?

My mom played a crucial role in inspiring my journey. She is the oldest of seven children, and at a young age she had to take on a motherly role for all her siblings while raising them all out of foster care. That is a longer story in itself, but her resilience and strength has always been a pivotal part of my decision making and perseverance. I've also always had amazingly strong women around me whether it was teachers, women in leadership positions, or colleagues that I was able to look up to and rely on for support. Without the strong support of other women who were more than willing to lift me up and guide me, I would not be the young woman I am today. I believe in the power of sisterhood and know how impactful it can be when women come together to do uplift one another as many pivotal moments in history have also demonstrated.

2. Why is Women's History Month important to highlight?

Women's History Month should be important to everyone! Since the beginning of time, women have made monumental strides to ignite change and support the world we live in and that deserves to be celebrated, highlighted, and congratulated every day! For me, specifically, it's important to give the women in our lives and in history their flowers for all the ways they've been able to show up in our lives. We have to let them know they matter, and they are recognized for their efforts.

1. What woman/women have inspired or mentored you along your journey?

Every day, I am surrounded by intelligent, strong, and independent women. My family is made up of mostly women and I am one out of three sisters. For over four years, I was privileged to work alongside Tamara Yamada, Associate Registrar for Graduation at Cal State LA. Tamara was my first boss in the CSU System and our relationship strengthened over time. She is an exceptional boss and woman who has encouraged many of her staff to pursue higher education. Many of them have completed their Master's Degrees in Education or Business, me included. I am honored to say she is my mentor and friend. She is a powerful being that lights up every room she walks in. Tamara has inspired me in many ways. She has taught me that to be a leader, you must lead with kindness and empathy toward others. Tamara has always reminded me to be passionate about what I do and doing it with purpose.

2. Why is Women's History Month important to highlight?

Women should be celebrated every day! As the years have progressed, women have shown equal strength like men in obtaining higher education, becoming leaders, and building businesses, all while continuing in prioritizing their families and goals. I celebrate all the women who are breaking generational chains and encouraging the younger generation to aspire for greater things and beating any odds. Que Viva las Mujeres Empoderadas y Chingonas !!

1. What woman/women have inspired or mentored you along your journey?

In reflecting on the women who have been a source of inspiration for me, I would gravitate towards a more cliché answer and say, my mother. My mother, originally from Taiwan, made the difficult decision to move to America with my father, uprooting her entire life to provide more opportunities for her future family. She has sacrificed so much throughout her time raising us and continues to have a selfless, kind, and caring heart. She especially shows her love through preparing and baking Taiwanese goodies, a gesture I now cherish more as an adult.  I look up to her and hope to be a great mother figure like she is in the future.

The second woman would be my former coworker, Marsha. She is dedicated, has a strong work ethic, and reminds me to reflect on my purpose of being a light. She pushes those she loves and cares for to be the best version of themselves and to not settle for less. She has encouraged and empowered me to speak up, advocate for myself when there is a lack of support, and, most importantly, develop my voice. Lastly, her consistent encouragement has also motivated me to prioritize my professional and academic growth to pursue my own master's degree.

2. Why is Women's History Month important to highlight?

Women’s History Month is important because it’s a carved-out time to recognize, celebrate, and honor women’s accomplishments all throughout history. It not only highlights women’s numerous contributions to society but also provides additional education and awareness of issues women have encountered in the past and continue to experience until this very day. The month also acts as an inspiration and motivation for the current and future generations by empowering women and girls as well as promoting gender equality. We still have a long way to go to create a more equitable community but hopefully, we can continue to take steps forward.

Her name is Bernadette (Bernie) Robert. She was like a mother to me. She mentored and guided me in my professional and personal life. She carried herself with so much grace and accomplished so much in her life. She initiated several initiatives including building the Title IX and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion office at MSMU. You would never know she was undergoing stage 4 cancer treatment as she was always present and mindful of others and in the moment.
