Open Enrollment: September 11 through October 6

The open enrollment period for any changes to health, dental, flexcash, certain voluntary benefits and enrollment/re-enrollment in the dependent care and healthcare reimbursement account plan runs from Monday, September 11 through Friday, October 6. This is also the time you may add or delete eligible dependents. Changes made during the enrollment period are effective January 1, 2018. Due to CalPERS and other state restrictions, open enrollment requests received after 5:00 p.m. on October 6 will NOT be accepted.

New this year! We will hold two Open Enrollment Informational Sessions. Please join us in the Barrett Athletic Administration Center (BAAC) Conference Room (223 BAAC) on Friday, September 22 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., or Tuesday, September 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Benefits Department staff will provide an overview of our benefits programs, highlight changes occurring this Open Enrollment period, and assist with completing benefits forms and answering questions.

The Annual Open Enrollment Benefits Fair is on Tuesday, September 19 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on the third floor patio of Brotman Hall. Please come to meet representatives from our benefits vendors and learn more about your benefits.

Important Notice from Caltrans: Lanes and Sidewalk Closures of SR-22

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close one lane on both directions of SR-22 (7th Street) from Channel Drive to Pepper Tree Lane beginning September 5, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The construction schedule will be in effect for two weeks as crews begin to upgrade sidewalk curb-ramps to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act and install new pedestrian push buttons.

The following sidewalks will close for two weeks 24/7, while multiple crews work in the area:

  • Intersection of Channel Drive and 7th Street
  • Intersection of West Campus Drive and 7th Street
  • Intersection of Margo Avenue and 7th Street
  • Intersection of Pepper Tree Lane and 7th Street

Detours will be provided for pedestrians during sidewalk closures. Motorists may experience delays and are encouraged to plan ahead. For real time freeway traffic information, please visit the Caltrans Quickmap.

Closures are part of a $1.2 million pavement rehabilitation project on SR-22, between PCH (SR-1) and the San Gabriel River Bridge. All American Asphalt is the contractor on this project. It is expected to be completed in Winter 2018. Caltrans advises motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert.”

Purchasing 101 Workshop Offered Tuesday, September 12

If you are a staff member responsible for ordering office supplies, goods and services, the Purchasing 101 Workshop will provide an overview of CSULB Purchasing guidelines and various purchasing options such as submitting requisitions and purchase orders online, procurement card use, Staples Advantage office supply orders and direct expense forms.

The workshop will be on Tuesday, September 12 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Barrett Athletic Administration Center (BAAC), Room 222. Solar Project Ribbon Cutting
and Clean Energy Project Celebration Friday, September 15

The official ribbon cutting ceremony for CSULB’s new 4.75 megawatt solar panel installation will take place on Friday, September 15 at 10 a.m. in Parking Lot 14. The event will also celebrate the integration of 1 megawatt energy storage batteries into the campus grid, and progress on construction of the College of Continuing and Professional Education structure, the CSU’s first Net Zero Energy classroom building. Ready Long Beach 2017: Emergency Preparedness Expo
Saturday, September 16, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Beach Circle

Launched in 2014, READY Long Beach is a citywide community outreach event that promotes emergency preparedness and readiness to the whole community. This family-friendly event is free to the public and will feature:

  • Fire safety demonstrations
  • Emergency vehicle displays
  • Preparedness supplies and equipment
  • Information and vendor booths
  • Life-saving tips, including hands-only CPR, active shooter response and more
  • Music and food trucks

Student Success Center
Construction Information Session Friday, September 8

Please join Physical Planning and Facilities Management (PPFM) for an informational session discussing the upcoming construction of the new Student Success Center (PH2 Renovation) on September 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Hall of Science (HSCI), Room 102.

Topics such as construction impacts, site logistics, parking changes during construction, project schedule and who to contact during construction will be covered. There will also be a question and answer session related to this project with the PPFM Senior Manager of Construction Services. Parking Lot 3 Availability Friday, September 8

The southeast section of Lot 3 will be closed for Smorgasport on Friday, September 8. Vehicle entry into Lot 3 will be closed at 3 p.m. and vehicles parked in that lot must vacate by 5 p.m. Alternative parking locations include Lot 4 and Lot 17.
