Urgent: Advice on Kaspersky Lab Antivirus and Related Products

The Department of General Services (DGS) and the California Department of Technology (CDT) recently issued a joint communique (Bulletin #: P-09-17), requiring all State departments and agencies to immediately stop the use of Kaspersky Lab antivirus and related products and suspend the procurement of Kaspersky Lab products until further notice.

In accordance with the DGS and CDT joint communique, all Technical Coordinators on our campus have been notified about this advisory and have been asked to ensure that no Kaspersky Lab products are used on our University-owned computing devices. Instead, campus-licensed Symantec antivirus and information security products should be used. If you believe that your University-owned computer has Kaspersky Lab products installed, please contact your Technical Coordinator for assistance. To locate your Technical Coordinator, please visit the Campus Technical Coordinators webpage or contact the Technology Help Desk at ext. 5-4959 and someone can help locate your local support coordinator.

It is also recommended to exercise caution when using Kaspersky Lab antivirus and information security products on personal computing devices. The use of alternative antivirus and information security products is recommended, if possible. For example, Microsoft Security Essential is a free antivirus and security suite for Windows computers available from Microsoft website; Sophos offers its antivirus program for Mac computers free of charge.

If you have questions about this advisory, please contact ITS-ServiceManagement@csulb.edu. If you are concerned about the validity of this message, please contact the Technology Help Desk at ext. 5-4959.

August Skillsoft Spotlight: The Art of Effective Feedback

There is an art to both delivering and receiving feedback. Feedback can be a powerful tool for personal growth when the feedback is delivered and received in a positive way. Check out the following resources to increase your skills in both areas.

The 34-minute course, Polishing Your Feedback Skills, covers when and how to give feedback positively, how to handle bad reactions and your own nervousness, and how to give feedback to people at different organizational levels.

Though valuable, feedback can be hard to accept. Gaining a Positive Perspective on Feedback is a 30-minute course that covers the value of feedback and how it differs from praise. You'll also learn how to manage your reactions and response to feedback, and how to use it for professional growth.

Simply Said: Communicating Better at Work and Beyond is an all-encompassing resource for improving communication. This book connects skills with scenarios and purpose to help you hear and be heard, and provides comprehensive guidance toward getting your message across, and getting the results you want. Specifically, check out Chapter 14 entitled, “Do You Have a Minute? Sharing Meaningful Feedback.”

A professional development plan can be created in conjunction with your ASM and appropriate administrator, and can be completed electronically. Appropriate administrator approval must be obtained in advance to complete coursework during work hours.

Access to these training resources is available on the Staff HR Skillsoft training spotlight webpage. Questions? Contact SHR-Training@csulb.edu, ext. 5-1052.
