Spring 2012 VET NET Ally Seminar –
Register by Thursday, April 19, 2012
Because the transition from military life to life on a college campus can be difficult, the CSULB Veterans Affairs Services Office has developed the VET NET Ally Program. The goal of the program is to foster a campus atmosphere that supports the academic and personal success of service members and veterans, and to establish a network of visible allies to provide support and assistance to CSULB students who have served in our armed forces. This program includes seminars to educate faculty and staff of the unique needs and concerns of military service members and veterans studying at CSULB.
Interested faculty and staff are invited to participate in a half-day VET NET ally training seminar on Thursday, April 26 from 8 am to 12 noon. Attendance is limited. To reserve a seat, please contact Marshall Thomas by Thursday, April 19 at ext 5-4279 or Marshall.Thomas@csulb.edu.
At the end of the training, participants will be given a decal to display in their workspace to show they are allies to CSULB's student veterans. More information about the program is available online.
CSULB Research Foundation Moves to PeopleSoft ...
and a New Name
Over the past several months, the Research Foundation has been focused on the migration of its finance, accounting and grants administration system to PeopleSoft. Research Foundation information will not be merged with university data, rather, the Research Foundation is being set up as a separate business unit on the campus PeopleSoft platform. We anticipate that most existing PeopleSoft users will find this migration to be minimally disruptive. Once the migration is complete, campus users will be able to access all of their accounts in a common finance and accounting system. Although many campus users will be familiar with PeopleSoft functionality, several users on Foundation projects may not be as well-versed. Training sessions will be available to anyone who wishes to learn how to access and use Research Foundation PeopleSoft accounts.
The “Go Live” date for the conversion to PeopleSoft will be July 1, 2012. As that date draws closer, additional detailed information will be disseminated.
You probably noticed a new name in the above paragraph. The former CSULB Foundation is now officially known as the CSULB Research Foundation. The new name was necessary as the campus establishes and defines the roles of the two campus foundations, with the newly established CSULB 49er Foundation assuming responsibility for gift administration.

Nomination of Staff Candidates for Academic Senate
Nomination Forms Are Due Friday, May 4, 2012
Nominations are being sought for one staff senator position on the Academic Senate. This position is for a three-year term. Academic Senate is a full-University Senate which concerns itself with the many needs of the University by developing policies and serving as a communications link between the faculty and the administration of the University. It includes not only faculty in its voting membership but also representatives from the staff, students, student services, and administration. Academic Senate meets twice a month during the academic year. If you are interested and are a permanent, full-time staff employee (including auxiliaries), nomination forms and more information are available on the Staff Council website. You may also email Cynthia Riley (C.Riley@csulb.edu) to have a nomination form e-mailed to you. Nomination forms are due Friday May 4, 2012.
Passing of Former Employee James Neal
James Neal, former long-time CSULB employee and student, passed away recently of an apparent heart attack. Jim, as he was known to his friends, took early retirement about 10 years ago for health reasons. Previously he had served as Director of Test Services and worked in the Career Development Center. Jim was long associated with CSULB, having been an active and well-liked Psychology graduate student leader in the late 1970s. A memorial to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, April 25 from 12 – 1:30 pm in the University Student Union Beach Ballroom, #251A.
Campus Green
Did you know that millions of used writing instruments are discarded and end up in landfills annually? CSULB and TerraCycle are working to reverse this trend. The writing instruments we collect across campus will be recycled or "upcycled" and turned into low-cost consumer items sold by major retailers. Upcycling is the process of reusing waste to form creative new products.
Look for the TerraCycle recycling boxes in your area and deposit your "dead" pens in the box instead of a landfill! All markers, highlighters, pens, woodcase pencils, mechanical pencils, dry erase markers, and correction tape products from any brand or manufacturer can be recycled. Locations and more information are found on Purchasing's website.
