Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Human Development at California State University, Long Beach!
Human Development (HDEV) is the interdisciplinary study of how people grow, learn, connect, and thrive across the lifespan. Drawing from psychology, sociology, anthropology, and biology, our students explore the many ways that families, communities, cultures, and social systems shape human experiences.
What makes HDEV special is not only what students learn, but how they learn it. Our students engage with real-world issues through research, community engagement, and hands-on learning opportunities that connect the classroom to the communities around us. Through courses in qualitative and quantitative research methods, students learn to think critically, analyze data, and ask meaningful questions about the world. Through internships and other experiential learning opportunities, they apply their knowledge in professional settings and gain valuable experience before graduation.
Many students come to HDEV knowing they want to work with people but are still exploring exactly how. We see that exploration as one of the most important parts of the college experience and we have courses to guide students along the way. Whether students discover a passion for education, healthcare, counseling, social services, nonprofit leadership, research, or another field entirely, our goal is to provide the support, mentorship, and opportunities that help them find their path.
Our department is also a community. As a relatively small and close-knit major, students build meaningful relationships with faculty and peers who are invested in their success. Here, students are known by name, challenged to grow, and encouraged to pursue their dreams.
At its core, Human Development is about understanding people and building a world in which individuals and communities can flourish. We are committed to preparing graduates who are not only graduate school- and career-ready but who are prepared to contribute thoughtfully and compassionately to building a more just world.
I invite you to learn more about our department and all that Human Development has to offer.
Go Beach!
