CalVet College Fee Waiver and Financial Aid

The CalVet College Fee Waiver is a California state benefit that waives eligible systemwide tuition charges for qualifying students. It is not a financial aid award, and the Financial Aid Office does not determine whether you qualify for the waiver.

However, because the waiver helps pay your educational expenses, it is considered Other Financial Assistance (OFA) when your financial aid eligibility is reviewed.

What is Other Financial Assistance (OFA)?

Other Financial Assistance (OFA) is funding or a benefit that helps pay your educational expenses but is not awarded through the Financial Aid Office.

Because the CalVet College Fee Waiver reduces the amount you are charged for tuition, Financial Aid must include it when reviewing your financial aid eligibility. Once the waiver is applied to your student account, Financial Aid will review your financial aid package and make any required adjustments.

Using the waiver may reduce or cancel financial aid that is intended to pay the same tuition charges.

If you have questions about your current financial aid, contact the Financial Aid Office before submitting your CalVet College Fee Waiver.

Both the Cal Grant tuition award and the CalVet College Fee Waiver pay toward eligible systemwide tuition.

If you use the waiver, you cannot also receive the tuition-paying portion of your Cal Grant for the same tuition charges. Financial Aid will review and adjust your award after the waiver is applied.

The State University Grant (SUG) is intended to help pay eligible systemwide tuition.

If the CalVet College Fee Waiver covers your tuition, you will not also be eligible to receive SUG for those same tuition charges. Financial Aid will review and adjust your award after the waiver is applied.

The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) considers fee waivers when calculating Middle Class Scholarship eligibility.

If you use the CalVet College Fee Waiver, your Middle Class Scholarship may be reduced or canceled. Because MCS eligibility is calculated by CSAC, changes to your award may not appear immediately.

Not necessarily.

The Federal Pell Grant is not limited to tuition. Receiving the CalVet College Fee Waiver does not automatically make you ineligible for a Pell Grant.

Your Pell Grant will continue to be based on federal eligibility requirements, including enrollment status, financial need, satisfactory academic progress, and lifetime eligibility.

Not automatically.

Federal regulations require Financial Aid to consider all educational resources when determining your aid package. Your loans will be reviewed as part of your overall financial aid eligibility.

It depends on the scholarship.

Scholarships that are restricted to paying tuition may need to be reduced, canceled, or applied differently if the CalVet College Fee Waiver already covers those charges.

Scholarships that may be used for other educational expenses may not be affected.

If you are unsure, contact the scholarship provider or the Financial Aid Office.
