Hillside North Student Housing Project

The project will construct a new 102,092 Gross Square Foot (GSF) 4-story student housing building with a minimum of 424 beds based on single and double occupancy rooms. The new building will consist of a mixture of single and double occupancy dormitory rooms. Each floor will include support spaces such as restrooms, showers, lounges, study rooms, kitchen, electrical, mechanical. The new building will also incorporate satellite offices for essential student-support programs such as Basic Needs, Project Rebound, and Student Counseling and Psychological Services. In addition, the building is expected to include three staff/faculty apartments, a 2,000 square feet multipurpose/tutoring room, and music practice rooms.

The project will be funded, in part, by the State of California under Senate Bill 183 which established the “Higher Education Student Housing Grant Program” to increase the current stock of affordable student housing across the three public higher education segments in California. The campus will use a distributed-beds model for its affordable student housing that will distribute the same number of newly built beds across all campus-housing offerings (rather than providing a new building solely dedicated to affordable rate housing). Not only will this help protect students from being identified by others as lower income, this strategy also enables students of certain years to live together in the type of housing that is most suited for their experience. Research has shown that traditional-aged first-year students do best in traditional double loaded corridors or shared-living pods while upper division students are better suited for suites or apartments, providing more independence and privacy. The new Hillside North Student Housing building design is expected to be similar in quality and student experience to the recently constructed Parkside North Student Housing building.
