Ultracold atoms provide a unique platform for exploring phenomena found across physics, offering insight into the fundamental properties that drive them. In particular, the hydrodynamics of quantum fluids connects to a wide range of systems, from superconductivity to neutron stars. In this talk, I will describe how we experimentally realize dilute-gas quantum fluids, the properties that make them unique, and the techniques we use to manipulate them. I will then discuss recent results on extreme shocks and countersuperflow in these systems.

About the Colloquium

The Colloquium is a unique opportunity for students to learn about new developments in physics and what physicists do after they graduate. Hosted by the Physics and Astronomy Department at California State University, Long Beach, the weekly meetings invite guests from universities, research laboratories, and industry to present and discuss current topics in physics. All students are encouraged to attend for a well-rounded experience and training in physics.
