CSULB Dance Major Auditions

Please note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all auditions for the dance major should be submitted via video.

Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the CSULB Dance major.  After you have applied to CSULB via Cal State Apply webite, the second step in becoming a dance major at CSULB is to take the CSULB Dance entrance audition.  CSULB Dance is seeking dynamic and distinctive movers and thinkers who are dedicated to the pursuit of a degree in dance. Preparation for admittance into our department comes in many forms: broad academic preparation, continual study of numerous forms of dance (with emphasis on contemporary/modern dance, jazz, ballet, and hip hop), performance experience, and exposure to dance as creative and expressive art form. While we look at a dancer’s technique and training during our dance auditions, we also look at the individual. We seek students who are dedicated to learning and open to new ways of exploring and studying dance.

As an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD), CSULB Dance offers training in numerous levels. Preparatory levels include Introduction, Beginning, and Intermediate; Dance Major levels include Levels I, II, III, and IV Technique.

Prospective dance majors for all of our degree paths participate in the audition process.

The admissions audition for the dance major consists of a completed audition application and a video audition.  The audition video has three parts: 1) Introduction 2) Solo or improvisation and 3) Learning 2 of the 4 dance forms on the video and recording them. Please email to request the audition video link.

Minor Technique Screening and Current CSULB Students

If you are a current CSULB student who wants to become a dance major, please email for instructions on how to submit a video audition.  Please make sure you include your student ID number and what semester you are auditioning for.

The Minor Technique Screening (MTS) allows Dance Minors to enroll in major-level technique classes and to audition for and participate in department concerts. If a dance minor is interested in taking other dance major-only courses, permission from the instructor of the course is required. Students passing the MTS should be aware that the first day of each semester also involves a screening process to assure that all students are enrolled in the appropriate level of dance technique. In general, students should plan to remain at the same level of technique for two semesters.

Once passing the MTS and taking major-level technique classes, a student has one year to successfully add the Minor in Dance to their program of study at CSULB or will be disallowed from continuing to take major-level technique and auditioning for concerts. Please contact Dance Undergraduate Advisor Kirsten Sumpter ( for assistance.

The Minor Technique Screening is just like the freshman audition.  Due to COVID-19, we will not have in person auditions, instead we will ask for video audition submissions.  Please email and request instructions and a link to the audition video.
