Department Auditions

After you have applied to the University, the second step in becoming a dance major at CSULB is to audition.  CSULB Dance is seeking broadly trained, dynamic, and distinctive movers and thinkers who are dedicated to the pursuit of a degree in dance. Preparation for admittance into our department comes in many forms: vigorous academic preparation, continual study of numerous forms of dance (with emphasis on ballet, jazz, and contemporary modern dance), performance experience, and exposure to dance as an art form. While we look at a dancer’s technique and training during our dance auditions, we also look at the individual. We seek students who are dedicated to learning and willing to expose themselves to the possibilities of dance that have yet to be investigated.

As an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD), CSULB Dance offers ballet and modern dance training in numerous levels. Preparatory levels include Introduction, Beginning, and Intermediate; Dance Major levels include Levels I, II, III, and BFA Technique.

All California residents must attend the live audition. Exceptions are only made for extenuating circumstances and must be approved by the Department Chair, Betsy Cooper, at least one week prior to the live audition.   Please email dance@csulb.edu.

The Audition:

  • The on-campus audition is a technique class divided into three parts: a ballet barre and center, a modern center, and across-the-floor movement sequences. CSULB Dance faculty will teach the audition class and serve as panelists for assessing potential students. Students will be evaluated on technical proficiency including placement, stability, strength, musicality, body articulation and coordination, qualitative range, and ability to accurately replicate movement sequences. The panel is also interested in individual artistic expression, projection, and performance quality of each dancer.
  • The class will last 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on the number of auditioneers with a break in-between the ballet section and the modern section.

What to expect the day of the audition:

  • The on-campus audition for Freshman students has two sessions: session 1 at 9 am and session 2 at 1:30 pm. Your check-in time will depend on your audition time, so read your confirmation letter carefully. Audition check-in will end 20 minutes before the beginning of the audition, so arrive early. At this time, parents are welcome to join the dancers in the warm-up studio for a greeting by the Department Chair who will review procedures for the audition and answer questions that students or parents might have regarding the admission process. Observers may watch the audition from the hallway and the 2nd floor breezeway but are not allowed in the studios during the auditions.

Audition Dress:

  • Female students must wear solid-colored leotards and tights or a unitard. Male students must wear dark tights or thigh-length “biker” style shorts, a dance belt, and a solid colored form-fitting t-shirt or tank. All students will wear ballet shoes for the ballet portion and dance barefoot for the remainder of the audition. Cover-up clothing such as sweatshirts and t-shirts is not allowed. Long hair should be off the face and styled neatly.

Audition Results:

  • Results will be emailed within one week of the audition.  Students may only audition for the dance major twice.

If using an iPhone 7 or beyond, please bring your headphone jack adaptor. If using your phone for playback, make sure the phone is in “airplane” or “do not disturb” mode. Make sure all cases have been removed from your playback device. Minor Technique Screening

The Minor Technique Screening (MTS) allows Dance Minors to enroll in major-level ballet and modern courses at levels I-III. It also allows Dance Minors to audition for and participate in any department concerts. It does not allow Dance Minors to take any other dance major-only courses unless the student gains permission from the instructor of the course. Once a student passes the MTS, he/she must screen the first day of the semester in the DANC 152 Modern Technique I or DANC 154 Ballet Technique I course with the dance majors. Please plan to remain at the I level of technique for at least two semesters.

Once passing the MTS and taking major-level technique classes, a student has one year to successfully add the Minor in Dance to their program of study at CSULB or will be disallowed from continuing to take major-level technique and auditioning for concerts. Please contact Dance Undergraduate Advisor Kirsten Sumpter (kirsten.sumpter@csulb.edu) for assistance.

The MTS is just like the freshman audition in that it is a technique class divided into three parts: a ballet barre and center, a modern center, and across-the-floor movement sequences. The Department of Dance faculty will teach the audition class and serve as panelists for assessing potential students. Students will be evaluated on technical proficiency including placement, stability, strength, musicality, body articulation and coordination, qualitative range, and ability to accurately replicate movement sequences. The panel is also interested in individual artistic expression, projection, and performance quality of each dancer. Results will be emailed within one week of the audition, and in August results will be emailed immediately. Students may audition for the MTS twice, but may only audition once per semester.

    Screening Dates:

    • August 22, 2019 at 2pm

What to Expect the Day of the MTS:

    • Check in time will depend on which date you sign up for, so read your confirmation carefully. When you check in, your check deposit will be returned. Check in will end approximately 20 minutes prior to the start of the MTS as students will then attend a brief meeting with the Department Chair, who will review procedures for the audition and answer questions that students have regarding the process. The audition will begin promptly at the scheduled time with the ballet class followed by a modern class. Observers may watch the audition from the hallway and the 2nd floor breezeway but are not allowed in the studios during the auditions. No video/photography is allowed during the audition process.

    Audition Dress:

    • Female students must wear solid-colored leotards and tights or a unitard. Male students must wear dark tights or thigh-length “biker” style shorts, a dance belt, and a solid colored form-fitting t-shirt or tank.
