ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF DANCE: 
CSULB is home to approximately 40,000 graduate and undergraduate students and the state's largest and most comprehensive publicly funded school for the arts. CSULB Dance is housed within the College of the Arts (COTA), which includes five additional departments in art, design, film, music, and theater, as well as the Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum, and the Carpenter Performing Arts Center (CPAC). Enrollments in the department are representative of our state's demographics. Many of our majors transfer from California's extensive high-quality community college system. 
 
Our department takes a holistic, student-centered approach to education that integrates dance-making and physical training with coursework in dance history, ethnography, dance science, somatics, pedagogy, design, production, and an array of immersive and challenging creative and research opportunities. Through these experiences, our faculty seeks to equip each of our graduates with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to engage in the dynamic field of dance, and its related studies, and to contribute to its vitality as artists, scholars, educators, and advocates. 

The Department of Dance offers the following degree pathways: MA, MFA, BA, BS, BFA, and a dance minor. Additionally, the Department offers a teaching credential in Dance through the College of Education. Recent and ongoing revisions to the undergraduate curriculum work to dismantle the hierarchy of Western dance forms and acknowledge the artistic and cultural contributions and relevance of diasporic dance forms to our communities and the profession. Significant changes include the elevation of Street dance to an area of concentration within the BA/BFA, and the inclusion of contemporary African dance (Umfundalai), Latinx/e and/or Afro-Latinx/e dance forms.

Work Study positions

COTA Internship Scholarship

The College of the Arts is offering 8-10 scholarships for up to $5,000 each.

Internships open many doors for student job placements and other career opportunities. The COTA Internship Scholarship creates the opportunity for current COTA students to pursue unpaid internships in their field of study. The scholarship is designed to cover a student’s costs during the period of the internship. Those costs may include travel and housing if the internship is not based locally. Scholarship amounts will vary depending on the geographical location of the internship and the travel expenses budget students submit. 

Scholarship Requirements 

  • College of the Arts major;
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5;
  • Must be enrolled in a CSULB internship course at time of application;
  • Must be accepted/hired to an external unpaid internship at time of application;
  • Upon scholarship’s acceptance: Submit a ‘thank you’ letter to the donor.
