The COMM Tutoring Center (CTC) provides FREE academic support and mentorship for ALL (and only) CSULB COMM classes, including upper division, lower division, core, and elective COMM courses.

We are open in the spring and fall semester starting on week 2 through the last week of classes. We do not offer tutoring during finals, on all university-recognized holidays/closures, and during the inter-sessions (Summer and Winter).

Please note: Peer mentors’ advice never supersedes the guidance of the professor or the best judgment of the student.

Appointments scheduled during traditional CTC business hours (i.e., Monday thru Thursday 9am-5pm) can be attended either in person (in AS-351) or via video chat (Microsoft Teams).

Appointments scheduled outside of traditional CTC business hours (i.e., outside of the regular M-Th 9am-5pm hours) will be held exclusively via video chat on Microsoft Teams.

How can I become a Peer Mentor for the COMM Tutoring Center?
 

For individuals interested in serving as a Peer Mentor for the COMM Tutoring Center in an upcoming semester, please complete the Peer Mentor Application and submit it by the deadline noted on the application (which is typically by 12-noon on the first Friday in November for spring enrollment and the first Friday in April for fall enrollment).

How are Peer Mentors selected?

Peer Mentors are chosen based on:
1. Strong overall GPA in the Major
2. Eligibility (i.e., students must be COMM majors and must have completed COMM 200 as well as at least 3 of the core COMM classes [300, 301, 306, 307, 330] with a B or better),
3. Recommendations from faculty,
4. Breadth of course coverage represented on the team
5. Motivation/goals of service

Once chosen as a Peer Mentor, what happens next?

Selected individuals are invited to enroll in the designated upper division (400-level) course. Please be sure to speak with a COMM Undergraduate Advisor to ensure how this course will fit in your program of study in preparation for graduation.

Why should I consider applying to be a Peer Mentor?

Peer Mentors overwhelmingly find the experience to be a positive one. They have a flexible schedule while earning units for their service. They get to apply the communication skills that are covered in our classes to real-life situations. They make important contributions to our department as a meaningful way to give back and to inspire other students. It is a great resume builder and a wonderful opportunity to network with fellow COMM students (as well as faculty members). I encourage you to visit the center to speak with current Peer Mentors to learn more about their first-hand experiences and perceptions about this type of service-learning opportunity.
