2018 Nobel Prize in Physics

The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Arthur Ashkin (USA), Gérard Mourou (France) and Donna Strickland (Canada) “for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics.” Ashkin receives the prize “for the optical tweezers and their applications to biological systems," Mourou and Strickland “for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses." Dr. Donna Strickland is the third woman ever to win the physics Nobel. The Department of Physics and Astronomy at CSULB expects that in coming years more women will receive the prize as we continue our efforts to have the physics community actually represent the population.
