Provost Message - August 16, 2017 - Getting Around Campus

Getting Around Campus

As always, the campus in the first weeks of each semester experiences a high volume of traffic and campus roadway use. If you are unable to take an alternative form of transportation, we recommend arriving early, avoiding the most highly congested areas and taking the most direct route to parking.

Important Warning:  Disruption to Campus Traffic Routes July 17
through November 7

A major campus wide utility infrastructure improvement project began this summer. The first phase of this project focuses on the West Campus Drive Turnaround, which will be closed to vehicle traffic, including bicycles.  Primary construction at the Turnaround will be upgrading the existing storm drain system. In addition, deteriorated concrete pavement will be replaced and landscape elements in upper Brotman Hall plaza upgraded.

This construction will prevent travel across campus via the Turnaround. We are providing the following information now to allow ample time for you to plan an alternative route that avoids using the West Campus Turnaround.

Construction Location

West Campus Drive at the Beach Drive intersection (i.e., West Campus Turnaround) will be closed to through traffic from Monday, July 17 through Tuesday, November 7. Please see the campus turnaround closure map (PDF) depicting the road closures. The Turnaround should be avoided during the closure. Please adjust your routes to and from campus to accommodate this road closure.

Parking Impact

All parking lots will remain open during construction. But please note that upper campus parking lots 4, 5 and 6 will only be accessible from West Campus Drive, 7th Street entrance. It will not be possible to access these lots from campus entrances at Bellflower Boulevard, Earl Warren Drive or Merriam Way because the West Campus Turnaround will be closed to through traffic.

Similarly, it will not be possible to access lower campus parking lots 1, 3, 13, 14, 15, 16 17, 18, 19, 20 and parking structure 1 via West Campus Drive because the West Campus Turnaround will be closed to through traffic.

It will be possible to access lots 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and parking structures 2 and 3 via the East Campus Drive entrance off 7th Street.  However, reaching these lots will be far easier from Atherton Street or Palo Verde Avenue.

Peak times of congestion are from 7 a.m.-10 a.m. and 3 p.m.-5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
