Sergio O'Cádiz Moctezuma, 1934-2002

A Mexican-born artist and architect, living and working in the United States from the early 1960s, primarily in Orange County, Sergio O'Cádiz Moctezuma had a prolific, though largely under-recognized, creative output for many decades, including both a professional and private practice. His extensive body of work incorporated numerous and diverse influences, many of which will be explored in this retrospective exhibition at Cerritos College Art Gallery. Early sketches for some his most celebrated murals and renderings of working collaborations with his architectural colleagues, as well as examples of his own proposed, but unrealized, public projects, are prominently featured. Some of his largest paintings of indigenous iconography, religious themes, and colonial landscapes are also present, as are numerous self-portraits, studio ephemera and photographs, observational sketches, and detailed figure studies that provide deep insight into his daily working practice.

This upcoming exhibition is part of a year-long investigation into the life and work of Sergio O'Cádiz Moctezuma, facilitated by Sarah Rafael Garcia and culminating in exhibitions at Crear Studio in Santa Ana, the Irvine Fine Arts Center, and the Cerritos College Art Gallery.
