Abstract
This study examines how students draw on translanguaging practices while engaging in mathematical modeling. By listening to and moving across languages, students make sense of real-world problems and generate mathematical representations. Data from classroom interactions highlight how students’ flexible language use fosters collaboration, supports problem framing, and deepens reasoning. Translanguaging emerges as a resource for connecting everyday experiences with mathematical ideas, expanding access and participation in modeling tasks. Findings suggest that valuing students' full linguistic repertoires not only enhances communication but also strengthens their agency in mathematics, underscoring the role of listening across languages in modeling-rich learning environments.

Ayse Ozturk is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Old Dominion University. Her research focuses on learning and teaching mathematics as a humanizing practice. To make mathematics more relevant and accessible, she has focused on designing and teaching equitable mathematics curricula through enacting mathematical modeling, which involves using mathematics and personal experience to inform decisions about the real-world situations.
About the Colloquium
The Mathematics Colloquium is a unique opportunity for students to learn about new developments in mathematics and what mathematics and statisticians do after they graduate. Hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at California State University, Long Beach, the weekly meetings invite guests from universities, research laboratories, and industry to present and discuss current topics in mathematics. All students are encouraged to attend.
