Honoring the Presence of Dolores Huerta: Opportunity and Agency

The Department of Chicano and Latino Studies (CHLS) will be hosting a viewing of Peter Bratt's Documentary on Dolores Huerta that documents the details Huerta's leadership in organizing farmworkers, orchestrating historic grape boycotts, and negotiating the first union contracts for agricultural laborers. It highlights the intense personal and professional barriers she faced, including pervasive sexism within male-dominated political spaces, a severe 1988 police beating during a peaceful protest, and the complexities of raising eleven children while committing her life to societal transformation.

CHILS Faculty will be present to share three main points and take aways regarding the presence of Dolores Huerta in our lives:

  • Taking Advantage of the Opportunities we have been given
  • Living Reciprocity: A communal spirit of persistence, solidary and change
  • Telling the farmworker story through the life and presence of Dolores Huerta
