October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

National Cyber Security Awareness Month is observed each October in the United States, and encourages vigilance and protection by all computer users. In honor of National Cyber Security Awareness, the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) would like to encourage you to visit the CSULB Safe Computing site to refresh your cyber security safety knowledge. DoIT will be publishing online security reminders in various campus communications throughout the month of October and we also encourage you to visit the Safe Computing booth at the campus' annual Tech Day on November 2 which will take place at the Speaker’s Platform in front of the University Bookstore.

Cyber Security Reminder: Do Not Take the Bait

Email provides us a convenient and powerful communications tool. Unfortunately, it also provides scammers and other malicious individuals an easy means for luring potential victims. The scams they attempt run from old-fashioned bait-and-switch operations to phishing schemes using a combination of email and bogus web sites to trick victims into divulging sensitive information. To protect yourself from these scams, you should understand what they are, what they look like, how they work, and what you can do to avoid them. The following recommendations can minimize your chances of falling victim to an email scam:

  • Be cautious of phishing attempts, even from email addresses ending with @csulb.edu. Visit Phishing 101 for more information.
  • Be proactive by marking known phishing emails and spam as junk as shown in How to Mark Unwanted Email as Junk.
  • Be extra cautious of unsolicited email with links to external webpages.
  • Treat email attachments with caution.
  • Ensure your computer has antivirus software installed and it is up to date.

If you notice a suspicious email, please forward the email immediately to alert@csulb.edu. ITS will take the appropriate actions. For more information on phishing and to see examples, visit the Phishing 101 website.

“The Great Shakeout” Earthquake Drill
Thursday, October 19, 10:19 a.m.

The Great Shakeout occurs every third Thursday in October, organized to inspire individuals and communities to get prepared for large earthquakes. At 10:19 a.m. on Thursday, October 19 we will be joining millions of people worldwide to practice how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”

The drill will commence with a BeachALERT emergency notification. At this time, all members of the campus community are asked to identify a safe spot to Drop, Cover, and Hold On, as if a major earthquake is occurring, and remain in that position for at least 60 seconds. There will be no building evacuations, power outages, or any other simulated effects of this hypothetical incident. The purpose is to practice the correct earthquake response so in an actual event, your muscle memory will allow you to take swift action.

With recent major earthquakes in Mexico and Japan, we are again reminded that it is not a matter of IF a major earthquake will strike us, but WHEN. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) created this powerful 4.5-minute video depicting the impact of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake along the San Andreas Fault.

Curious about what to do if you are in unusual surroundings when an earthquake occurs, such as a theater or the beach? Learn from and share the Earthquake Safety Video Series with co-workers, family, and friends!

University Police is currently working on hosting a special documentary screening and presentation on the 1994 earthquake. More information will be shared as the details are confirmed.

If you have any questions, please contact the campus Assistant Emergency Coordinator, Allyson Joy at Allyson.Joy@csulb.edu.
