Dr. Susan Carlile

What fears or anxieties did you have about going to college?

I chose a small school because I was afraid of a large campus. When I arrived everything was foreign. I didn't know what classes to sign up for or what professors expected. I was afraid that I would not know enough and be very behind compared to my peers.

Professors are interested in seeing you succeed, but you have to take initiative. This means going to office hours and asking questions. I didn't realize how valuable the syllabus was until I'd been in college for awhile. But it tells you how your grade will be calculated, so you can figure out where to put your best energy. Also, after you've studied the syllabus, don't hesitate to ask professors questions so that you are sure you understand it. Every syllabus is different.
