Shark Safety - Fishing

VIDEO: Shark Safety - Fishing

In Southern California, we have a growing white shark population and our coastal waters, particularly our beaches, are nursery habitat for juvenile white sharks.

Fishermen need to know:

  1. It's illegal to fish for white sharks.
  2. Don't fish for sharks during the day around piers or public beaches.
  3. Use monofilament line that will break if you hook something large like a juvenile white shark and always use corrodible hooks.
  4. If you hook a white shark, cut the line as close to the leader as possible – the hook will rot out.
  5. Don't chum off public piers and beaches – just a little bait goes a long way and will do the trick.
  6. White sharks are important to our coastal ocean and beach communities – they eat stingrays, seal and sea lions and we need them to keep our oceans healthy.
