A Message From Provost Jersky

Provost Brian Jersky

Governor Brown recently released his recommendation for the CSU budget. Unfortunately, it is substantially less than requested and will not fully address our financial needs. As we understand the somewhat bleak news we have two ways to look at it; one is to worry and fret over our situation, another is to look at it as an opportunity.

The more information we have on what is happening on our campus, the better we can articulate what our essentials are. With the current political climate in our nation and state affecting everyone, we all need to be thinking of ways to be part of the solution. In other words, we must innovate how we are going to go forward with our mission intact, now more important than ever.

This is where you, the campus community, have opportunities to get involved.

On March 15, we will have our first ever LB Giving Day. This is your chance to support our community. The money raised goes directly to our needs.

Recently, we embarked on campus-wide town hall meetings on our budget. Our hope is that all stakeholders on campus will come away with a clear understanding of our campus budget as well as the challenges and opportunities we face.

Vice President Scott Apel and I will be outlining the budget opportunities and challenges that lie ahead during our “road shows.” They are open to all faculty and staff and will provide preliminary information based on what we know now. I invite you personally to come to one or more of them.

Here are upcoming dates and times:

  • Monday, March 19 @ 1:00-2:00pm in BAAC Conference Center (BAAC-223)
  • Wednesday, April 4 @ 3:00-4:00pm in BAAC Conference Center (BAAC-223)

As a campus, we must invest our time and energy in understanding our ‘budget’ and the financial landscape we are in.  If you would like to have us speak to your college or organization, please contact the provost’s office at extension 5-4129 or provost@csulb.edu.
