Overview of Academic Advising

Overview

California State University Long Beach offers a range of academic advising services to support student’s academic planning, assist with registration, and address special interests and needs. While we hope this site will provide students with helpful resources, we encourage students to find some time to schedule an academic advising session with their assigned advisor. We encourage students to meet regularly with advisor(s) and always consult an advisor prior to registering for courses.

What is Academic Advising?

Academic advising is an interactive process in which the advisor (resembling a high school counselor) helps the student achieve academic goals, acquire relevant information and services, and make responsible decisions consistent with interests, goals, abilities, and degree requirements. Decisions concerning careers and/or graduate study may be a part of the advising process. Advising may be personalized to consider the special needs of each student, which may include appropriate referral services.

The purpose of the advising partnership is to assist students through an academic journey that is intellectually, personally, creatively rewarding, and engaging at the University and to facilitate successful completion of their program in a timely manner.
