What is Global Studies?

Global Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines the complex relationships, challenges, and opportunities that shape our interconnected world. Rather than focusing on a single country or region, Global Studies explores issues that cross national borders and affect communities worldwide.

Students in Global Studies examine topics such as globalization, international development, migration, human rights, environmental sustainability, global health, economic systems, politics, culture, and social justice. By integrating perspectives from the social sciences, humanities, and related disciplines, students develop a deeper understanding of how global processes influence local communities and everyday life.

The Global Studies program at California State University, Long Beach prepares students to think critically, communicate effectively across cultures, and analyze global issues from multiple perspectives. Through interdisciplinary coursework, research, internships, study abroad, and community engagement, students gain the knowledge and practical experience needed to navigate an increasingly interconnected world.

Graduates of the program pursue careers in government, international organizations, nonprofit agencies, education, business, law, public policy, journalism, humanitarian work, and other fields that address global challenges and promote cross-cultural understanding.
