Alyce de Carteret

Alyce de Carteret is Assistant Curator of Art of the Ancient Americas at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Lecturer in Anthropology at CSU, Long Beach. She is an anthropologist whose work focuses on the visual culture, archaeology, ethnohistory, and oral history of the Indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica, with special expertise in the Classic Maya. Since joining LACMA in 2018, Dr. de Carteret has stewarded the museum’s robust collection of Mesoamerican objects, advancing a curatorial practice that connects collections with community—Indigenous rights-holding and descendant communities, artists, students, researchers, and the broader public. With Dr. Diana Magaloni, she co-curated We Live in Painting: The Nature of Color in Mesoamerican Art (2024–2025), and two companion exhibitions, Mixpantli: Space, Time, and the Indigenous Origins of Mexico and Mixpantli: Contemporary Echoes (2021–2022). Since 2020, she has directed the CSUDH-LACMA Visiting Scholars program with Catherine Burce, Senior Associate Collections Manager at LACMA, and Dr. Ken Seligson, Associate Professor and Chair of Anthropology at CSU, Dominguez Hills. Dr. de Carteret received her Ph.D. from Brown University in 2017.
