What fears or anxieties did you have about going to college?
I am a second generation college student and was most nervous about moving away from home for school because I moved from Los Angeles to Atlanta, GA and didn't know anyone before moving on campus. I was nervous about being away from family and being academically ready for college.
- Ph.D., UCLA
- M.A., NYU
- B.A., Spelman College
My best advice is to do the small things: go to every class, arrive early, sit in the front row, introduce yourself to professors, raise your hand at least once every class to ask a question or contribute to the class discussion. In short, TAKE UP SPACE!
Traveling, reading, watching sports (NBA: Laker fan, NFL: Rams fan)
- Wine
- A book
- A sunhat
I think it is helpful to work/volunteer in something in your major/field during school. It helps to apply your classroom learning to the "real world." I worked as an RA during college, but did field related work during the summer.
