About GEAR UP

The GEAR UP program is a federally funded grant program that supports efforts to increase the number of low-income students that obtain a secondary school diploma and prepare for and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP’s services include academic preparation and success, tutoring and learning skills, preparing for college and more! Please see the rest of our services here.

Corvallis, Waite, and Los Alisos middle schools

There is no registration or application process for GEAR UP. However, your student must attend one of our school sites and be part of classes 2027 and 2028. Currently, we serve 6th and 7th graders. In the next academic year, 2022/2023, we serve 7th and 8th graders.

Our grant was specifically written to directly serve the classes of 2027 and 2028.

Long Beach GEAR UP uses grant funds to administer student and parent activities, workshops, and services.

GEAR UP Academic Support

Yes we offer Math and English Language Arts tutoring in-class, during lunch, and after school. Check with your school site for details.

Yes, dual enrollment at Cerritos College is offered to all K-12 students. There are two pathways your student can take to take college level courses and receive credit toward a college degree. The first option for your student is to directly enroll and apply to Dual Enrollment at Cerritos College. Please contact our PFC for more information on this option. The 2nd option is to have your student apply their 8th grade year to the Norwalk HS College Pathway program which allows them to take college courses during their 4 years in high school and also earn credit toward a college degree. Students must complete the A-G requirements and earn a grade of a “C” or better to the UC and CSU systems. Private universities and community colleges may have different requirements.

GPA requirements vary. For UCs, students need a minimum of a 3.0 or above. For CSUs, students need a minimum of a 2.0 or above. For California Community Colleges, there is no G.P.A. requirement. For private schools, it depends on the school. Students need to research the University.

Most programs require students to take General Education classes which include courses from a wide variety of topics. Students may also be required to take classes for their major, also known as their field of study.

Tuition and fees vary. However, there is wide-range of financial support available, including scholarships, grants, work-study, and loans.

Yes, there is always a translator present if not the facilitator themselves provides services in Spanish.
