The Long Beach Public Service Corps (LBPSC), which was created in alignment with Mayor Rex Richardson’s priorities, is a citywide initiative designed to foster economic inclusion and build pathways to public service for local students and recent graduates. The program is funded by a $2.5 million grant from California Volunteers, with additional support from the City of Long Beach, which includes a $300,000 allocation from the 2024 city budget.

LBPSC provides paid fellowships placing participants in City departments where they gain hands-on experience, attend professional development workshops, and contribute to projects that directly impact their communities. Workshops focus on topics such as budgeting, community engagement, ethics, policy, and sustainability

The eligibility to be considered for this program includes seniors at CSULB or CSUD, students in CTE programs at LBCC, and recent graduates of CSULB or CSUDH who live in Long Beach. Participants also receive access to supportive services, such as transportation assistance, clothing vouchers, rental help, and utility payment aid, to ensure they can successfully complete the program.

Since its launch in 2023, the LBPSC has welcomed two cohorts of 50 and 49 students respectively, with the third cohort just now launching this fall, with more students and graduates from Long Beach State.

Kayla leaves everyone interested in this opportunity advice by saying, “You can make the most of this opportunity by simply showing up, being present, and staying open-minded. This program helped me grow professionally and personally, and it connected me to people who genuinely care about this community. Just go for it—have fun, ask questions, and be yourself.
