CSU Graduate Students Show-Off their Slammin’ Skills in Statewide Competition

Following up on last year’s successful event, the 4th annual CSU Grad Slam will take place May 3, 2024, hosted in virtual format by California State University, Long Beach.  Grad Slam is a fast-paced and exciting event in which graduate students present their research, scholarship, and creativity in no more than three minutes, using just one slide.  Grad Slam participants gain valuable experience delivering a professional presentation and competing for both a cash prize and statewide notoriety.

The CSU Grad Slam aligns with Three Minute Presentation competitions that have become a staple of the university graduate student experience to promote and exhibit graduate student research and scholarly activities across more than 200 universities worldwide.  First initiated in 2008, this approach to developing the skills to describe the research and scholarly activities to a general audience has grown to provide an accessible way to display and celebrate the variety and complexity of graduate student scholarship on these campuses.

On May 3rd, CSULB expects to virtually host over 400 attendees across the CSU campuses with esteemed representatives from the CO, state legislature, and industry. Each campus invites prominent guests and graduate alumni.  If you would like to invite someone to be highlighted at the event, please contact Dr. Dina Perrone.

The top two winners from individual CSU campus competitions from over 20 campuses will deliver their presentations via Zoom in front of panels of judges.  Preliminary rounds will take place from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Students with top-scoring presentations from the preliminary rounds will then compete in a final round at 1:00 p.m. to identify the top two winners as well as an Audience Choice award. First place winner receives a trophy, certificate, $1500, and bragging rights!

Anyone may attend the 2024 CSU Grad Slam, and we hope you join us to cheer on our graduate student competitors. Please contact Dr. Dina Perrone, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies at CSULB, with any questions or interest.
