Meet Ralston Lewars, a third-year Finance major at California State University, Long Beach, who is passionate about using his education to empower others—particularly athletes—through smart financial decision-making. His goal is to become a financial advisor, guiding clients toward long-term success with sound financial planning.

Ralston’s journey to CSULB began with a memorable experience at the university’s “Day at the Beach” and the Black Student Reception. This event highlighted the strong Black community and available resources, which played a key role in his decision to transfer to Long Beach. As a transfer student, Ralston found that building community on campus wasn’t easy at first. However, he was able to establish a sense of belonging through campus centers, programs, and events that celebrate diversity and promote student engagement.

One of the organizations that helped him feel at home is the Black Business Student Association (BBSA). Through BBSA, Ralston has had access to guest speakers and valuable career advice that has helped shape his vision for the future. His proudest accomplishments at CSULB are simply making it through his first semester—a milestone that marked both a personal and academic victory.

Ralston draws his strength from his family—especially his mother—who he credits as his biggest motivator. “She inspires me not to give up,” he shares. As a first-generation college student, Ralston takes pride in pushing forward and setting an example. He also looks up to others in his family who have overcome challenges, reminding him of the power of perseverance. Through his journey, Ralston exemplifies what it means to rise above challenges, build community, and strive toward a future where he can help others succeed financially and beyond.

To Ralston, being a Black scholar means having resilience and beating the odds. He believes that increasing the educational success of students of color starts with access to meaningful resources and support systems. This includes mentorship opportunities, academic support, and spaces that foster a sense of belonging. He emphasizes the importance of building networks—connecting students with alumni, professionals, and community members who can offer guidance, open doors, and inspire future success.
