About The Program

CSULB is a great place for incoming freshmen, transfer students, and international students to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology, for a few key reasons:

  • Small upper division lecture and lab classes, taught by Ph.D.-level faculty, so students interact directly with experts in the field.
  • Frequent field trips to nearby bay, estuary, rocky intertidal, and open ocean habitats.
  • Many opportunities for motivated undergraduates to carry out original scientific research.

A Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology from CSULB has helped many of our past students to successfully compete for marine biology-related jobs in local, state, and national resource management agencies and companies. Many of our alumni also go on to do graduate work in the marine sciences.

Our faculty also advise graduate students seeking to earn the Master of Science degree in Biology. Our graduate students work with faculty to design and carry out basic and applied research that moves the field of marine biology forward. Coursework in the program is designed to further strengthen student skills in research methods, experimental design, statistical analysis, and science communication. Our graduates pursue a wide diversity of science-related careers, including teaching at the community college level, working in biological consulting firms, or holding positions in regional, state, or federal resource management agencies. Many continue their studies in Ph.D. programs, opening up another suite of career opportunities.
