Abstract
Dr. Gustaveson will be leading us in a discussion about deficit narratives about multilingual learners in math and share findings from her work unpacking deficit narratives with elementary preservice teachers (PSTs). She will share the tensions that arose when leading discussions about deficit narratives with PSTs and implications for the work of teacher education in supporting teachers in building asset orientations.
Biosketch
Anna Gustaveson is an Assistant Professor of Inclusive Elementary Mathematics at Radford University in Virginia. She studies systemic narratives in math, particularly as they relate to gender, race, ethnicity, language, and culture, as well as teachers' beliefs about mathematics teaching and learning and student competence. Her work seeks to understand common deficit and anti-deficit narratives and practices from which teachers draw when planning and implementing math instruction, with the aim of supporting more teachers in taking up anti-deficit narratives and practices in their classrooms.
About the Colloquium
The Mathematics Colloquium is a unique opportunity for students to learn about new developments in mathematics and what mathematics and statisticians do after they graduate. Hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at California State University, Long Beach, the weekly meetings invite guests from universities, research laboratories, and industry to present and discuss current topics in mathematics. All students are encouraged to attend.
