How to Apply
To apply for admission to the Applied Statistics graduate program, you must apply to both the Mathematics & Statistics Department and to the University (CSULB). These are separate applications.
- To apply to the University (CSULB), complete the application via Cal State Apply. The application fee and one set of official transcripts must to be sent directly to the CSULB Office of Admissions. Additional information about applying to the University can be viewed at CSULB Admissions.
- To apply to the Mathematics & Statistics Department, complete the Applied Statistics Prerequisite Worksheet (PDF) and email it to the Applied Statistics graduate advisor. You do not need to send transcripts separately to the department; the advisor will be able to view your transcripts via your University application.
Note: letters of recommendation and GRE are not required for your admission, but are helpful. The letters should be addressed to the Applied Statistics graduate advisor.
Prerequisites
In addition to the CSULB prerequisites found in CSULB Graduate Programs Admissions Eligibility, the Applied Statistics graduate program requires the following:
- A bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university with a minimum 2.5 GPA. If your bachelors is still in progress, a minimum 2.7 GPA is required.
- A grade of "B" or better in MATH 247 (Linear Algebra), MATH 380 (upper division Probability), and STAT 381 (upper division Mathematical Statistics) or their equivalents. Each of these classes must be Calculus based. Please see the "Prerequisite Worksheet" above, which will be part of your application.
If you have not quite met either requirement, please contact the Applied Statistics graduate advisor to develop a strategy to overcome your deficiencies and get on track for admission. Many students satisfy the class prerequisites by taking MATH 380 and STAT 381 at CSULB through Open University.
