Book Talk: “Days of Dissent" with Gabriel San Román
You are invited to our upcoming Scholarly Intersections book talk “Days of Dissent: Revolts, Strikes, and Rebel Historians” with author and award-winning Los Angeles Times journalist, Gabriel San Román.
The event takes place Tuesday, October 13th in the Anatol Center Rm-119 from 4pm-6pm. There will be light refreshments and a free book raffle for attending.
San Román will present on his recently released book, Days of Dissent: Revolts Strikes and Rebel Histories which examines a labor event for every day of the year, reminding us of the constant battles against labor exploitation, both big and small. Days of Dissent approaches these labor histories for a popular audience, highlighting the forgotten tales of everyday labor resistance. Bridging journalism and historical inquiry, San Román reminds us how journalism is often the frontlines of history and approaching old journalistic headlines with a historical lens, allows us to see the deeper relationship between these disciplines. Importantly, San Román focuses on the racialization of labor throughout his book focusing on uprisings against slavery, Jim Crow segregation, Mexican American agricultural labor strikes, and colonial encroachment on indigenous lands to name just a few. This event is co-sponsored by the History Department, Department of Journalism and Public Relations, and the Department of Chicano and Latino Studies.
