Late in Cato's Tears and the Making of Anglo-American Emotion, after having dismissed the names of the discussants in Philip Freneau's The Rising Glory of America, Julie Ellison suggests that the "net effect of such naming strategies is to dignify opinion by disembodying it" (143).

In 1689, John Locke’s Two Treatises of Government appeared in print. In the last decade, Charles Sellers’s The Market Revolution: Jacksonian America, 1815-1846 (New York: OUP, 1991) has been a very influential synthetic study for scholars and critics of the nineteenth-century American literary tradition.

Robert Mayer rightly notes in his introduction that fidelity criticism, which assesses a film based on its adherence to a literary text, has been found lacking for some time—not only for privileging the literary text over the filmic one, but for the limitations of a comparison/contrast exercise in which the conclusion is largely predetermined.

Until very recently, scholars depended on visits to rare book rooms to read rare out-of-print works such as The Governess. Students of this work have mainly relied on Jill E. Grey’s 1968 facsimile edition, with its thorough analysis of the work’s publication history, and Mary Cadogan’s 1987 unannotated text; both of these editions are now out-of-print.

To its impressive list of editions of major eighteenth-century texts (see appendix below), the Institut National d'Etudes Démographiques in Paris has most recently added the Oeuvres économiques complètes of François Quesnay.

The Restoration was a messy period in French history, full of paradox, contradiction and ambiguity.

Joanne Freeman portrays the "culture of honor" as a "source of stability" in the "contested political landscape" of the early American political sphere (xv), and she does so in a witty and bright way. Affairs of Honor: National Politics in the New Republic is by no means the first study to demonstrate the importance of honor to America's founding generation.
