WSCUC 2020 Thematic Pathway for Reaffirmation
CSULB receives regional accreditation from WASC Senior College and University Commission. Because of the high quality of its last accreditation results, CSULB has been chosen as part of a select group of institutions to undergo Thematic Pathway for Reaffirmation. The institutional report and supporting documents are due in 2020 and the site visit will occur October 21-23, 2020.

What is WASC (WSCUC) and what does it mean for you?
WASC, officially known as WSCUC, or the WASC Senior College and University Commission, is the regional accreditor for CSULB. As such, WASC is “recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as certifying institutional eligibility for federal funding in a number of programs, including student access to federal financial aid” (https://www.wscuc.org/about).
What is “Thematic Pathway to Reaffirmation”?
In 2017, WSCUC unveiled a new reaffirmation program called Thematic Pathway, or TPR. Due to the strength of our history with WSCUC, CSULB was selected to be in the first cohort of TPR institutions. With TPR, the institution can focus its narrative on major initiatives central to campus life. CSULB chose the three core tenets of the institution developed from the 2017 – 2020 Strategic Plan and woven into the themes of Beach 2030: Intellectual Achievement, Inclusive Excellence, and the Public Good.” Faculty, staff, administrators and students participating on the Academic Senate’s WSCUC Steering Committee are working with other members of the campus community to collect evidence and write a narrative summary related to each theme. In addition to our narrative, we complete two worksheets-- the first demonstrates CSULB's compliance with the Four Standards of Accreditation and the second articulates the Educational Effectiveness Indicators all degree programs have adopted.
What happens during the site visit (October 21 – 23, 2020)?
The power point provided from our 2018 institutional training (link above) provides some information about the site visit. There are five members of our WASC site visit team from a variety of institutions throughout the WASC region. They will arrive on campus the morning of October 21, and will review documents and interview various campus members over two days. Though the schedule will be set a few weeks before the visit, the team members may ask to speak to specific individuals as their visit progresses. On October 23, the team will present its findings to an open forum of the campus community, and a report will be submitted to the WSCUC Commission, which will vote on the recommendations in February 2021.
