A Message From Provost Jersky
As we complete another school year, I extend my deepest appreciation for all your hard work this year. The end-of-year rush will make summer seem that much sweeter - we can all settle in for a slower pace. Before faculty take off for a much needed break, here are some items of interest.
Commencement
The end of the school year brings an excitement for our campus as students celebrate the milestone of commencement. The ceremonies honor our students and their families, as well as our celebrated faculty. I encourage you all to attend your colleges’ commencement ceremonies to support and applaud all of our students for their amazing achievements.
CSU Budget Update
As many of you know, in late April the California State University withdrew its proposal for the Board of Trustees to consider a tuition increase for the 2018-19 academic year. This was excellent news, especially for our students and their families, as they won’t face additional tuition. I am pleased that students and their families won’t bear extra costs. At the same time, we need full state funding of the CSU now more than ever.
Thought Exchange Follow-up
The online conversation on Thought Exchange, in which all our faculty were invited to participate, kicked off with the question “What are some important issues currently facing faculty at CSULB?” Over the two-week period the Exchange was open for discussion, we had 344 faculty participate, which was a 16% response rate. They shared 381 separate thoughts, which in total received 8,530 ratings. Workload and salary issues were the top concerns that faculty shared. Both these topics, especially the first, merit additional analysis and discussion.
I would like to thank everyone who participated in the process for this first Thought Exchange and for your honesty and candor. We will be looking at all of the thoughts expressed and shared in our future planning, and will be using the tool again for future communication purposes.
Mark Wiley Retirement
I am sad to inform you that Dr. Mark Wiley, Associate Vice President of Faculty Affairs, will retire at the end of this semester. Mark is not only a CSULB alumnus, but he has been on our campus for 39 years. He has been in his current position since January 2015, after nine years as the associate dean of personnel and curriculum for the College of Liberal Arts. We wish him the best of luck on his retirement, and will greatly miss his leadership and vision.
Jody Cormack – Welcome to the Academic Affairs Team
On the good side, I would like to congratulate Dr. Jody Cormack for accepting the position of Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Dean of Graduate Studies. Jody has a broad and diverse background. Before joining us at Academic Affairs, she was the chair of the Physical Therapy department. Prior to that, she was a facility coordinator at the CSU Office of the Chancellor, specializing in Doctor of Physical Therapy Programs and Academic Programs & Policy. We all look forward to her appointment, and what she will contribute to the university.
Lastly, I wish you all the best through the remainder of the term. You have worked long and hard to get to this point in the year. I look forward to seeing all of you at the commencement ceremonies, and wish you all the best for the summer, whatever your plans.

In Memoriam
Tom D. Frazier died on March 12 at the age of 52. Frazier was a geography professor with CSULB for 16 years. He is known for his passion for earth science, German culture and love for teaching.
Mr. Ken W. Rugg passed away on March 27. He was an emeriti faculty of the College of Liberal Arts.
Dr. Nail M. Senozan recently passed away. He was a Emeriti Faculty for the Natural Sciences.
