Patricia A. Pérez Named New Associate Vice President of Faculty Affairs

Patricia A. Pérez, Ph.D., has been named Associate Vice President of Faculty Affairs.

Pérez’ appointment, announced by Karyn Scissum Gunn, Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, is set to begin July 1, 2023.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Pérez to the Division of Academic Affairs.  I am confident her leadership will provide many opportunities for our faculty to grow, foster connections, and implement culturally responsive practices in the classroom and beyond.”

Since 2021, Pérez has served as the Associate Dean for Faculty in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). Furthermore, she has extensive experience providing training and guidance on implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion practices into retention and promotion standards.

“I am honored to be joining CSULB as the next AVP of Faculty Affairs to support the phenomenal current faculty and new faculty. I look forward to working alongside the CSULB community to realize the equity-minded goals and priorities outlined in the Beach 2030 Strategic Plan to ensure the sustained success of students, faculty, and staff,” Pérez said.

At CSUF, Pérez has served in numerous academic and administrative appointments such as Professor and Department Chair of Chicana and Chicano Studies at CSUF and Visiting Scholar at the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute.

Additionally, Pérez has experience revamping faculty recruitment and hiring processes, integrating retention plans as a requirement of tenure-track hires, and developing new tenure-track faculty programs centered on cross-discipline networking and community-building.

Pérez earned her bachelor’s degree in Chicana/o Studies and M.A. and Ph.D. in Higher Education and Organizational Change from University of California, Los Angeles. Additionally, Dr. Pérez earned her Ed.M. from Harvard University.
