Calculus Support Courses

The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics offer 1-unit support courses, MATH 22 and MATH 23, for students enrolled in calculus courses (MATH 122 and MATH 123, respectively). These support courses are designed to reinforce course material and provide timely refreshers of prerequisite knowledge.

About MATH 22 and MATH 23

MATH 22 and MATH 23 are conducted in a collaborative, group-work setting in which instructors facilitate problem solving and concept development. Students' academic histories, including prior coursework and high school records, have been reviewed to identify those who may benefit from additional support. Students will be notified at the beginning of the semester if they are required to enroll in MATH 22 or MATH 23 and attend one session per week. In addition, students will be required to enroll in and attend these support sessions if their exam scores fall below 75%.

These support courses provide an excellent opportunity to build a strong foundation in calculus. All students are welcome to participate, regardless of whether enrollment is mandatory.

There are 18 sections of MATH 22 and 18 sections of MATH 23 offered at various times throughout the week. Each session is 75 minutes long. All sections for each course cover the same material, allowing students to attend the session that best fits their schedule.

MATH 22 and MATH 23 are graded on a Credit/No Credit basis. Attendance during at least two-thirds of the non-exempt weeks qualifies a student for a Credit grade. Participation in MATH 22 or MATH 23 also earns extra credit in the corresponding calculus course (MATH 122 or MATH 123, respectively). The schedule and locations of MATH 22 and MATH 23 sessions will be posted on Canvas.

Additional Support

The university also employs a Science and Math Early Alert Program, a supportive and voluntary system designed to help students succeed. Midway through the semester, faculty may refer students who are experiencing academic challenges to their academic advisor. This is not a penalty; rather, it is an opportunity to connect with your instructor, advisor, and campus resources to get back on track and achieve your academic goals. For more information, please see Science and Math Early Alert Program.
