Jewish Studies Talk: Marc Dollinger - “Black Power and Jewish Politics”
The CSULB Jewish Studies Program is delighted to welcome back Dr. Marc Dollinger, who will be speaking on Thursday March 5th, at 7 pm, at the Alpert JCC (3801 E. Willow St., Long Beach). His topic will “Black Power, Jewish Politics.”
In his talk, Professor Dollinger will chart the transformation of American Jewish political culture from the Cold War liberal consensus of the early postwar years to the rise and influence of Black Power-inspired ethnic nationalism. He will show how, in a period best known for the rise of antisemitism in some parts of the Black community and the breakdown of the alliance between white Jews and Black Americans, Black Power activists enabled Jewish activists to devise a new Judeo-centered political agenda—including the emancipation of Soviet Jews, the rise of Jewish Day Schools, the revitalization of worship services with gender-inclusive liturgy, and the birth of a new form of American Zionism.
The holder Richard and Rhoda Goldman Chair in Jewish Studies and Social Responsibility at San Francisco State University, Prof. Dollinger is the author of several books, including: Black Power, Jewish Politics: Reinventing the Alliance in the 1960s, Quest for Inclusion: Jews and Liberalism in Modern America, and two edited volumes: American Jewish History: A Primary Source Reader and California Jews.
Like all Jewish Studies talks, this will be free and open to the public. To speed admission through security, the JCC asks that people rsvp first: https://jewishlongbeach.regfox.com/free-lectures .
