These trainings help faculty and staff support student well-being while building their own knowledge and skills around health, mental health, and student support. Learn how to recognize when students may need help and how to connect them with the right campus resources.
One goal of the Beach WELL Mental Health Strategic Plan is to expand training opportunities that help our campus community support student well-being. By learning basic well-being strategies and referral tools, faculty and staff become part of a stronger campus network of care that supports the success of our community.
Wellness Trainings
Wellness Ambassador Certificate Training Program
Facilitated by Basic Needs & Counseling & Psychological Services
Learn how to support students experiencing basic needs or mental health challenges. This certificate program introduces key wellness resources on campus and provides practical tools for responding to distressed students and making appropriate referrals.
Format: Virtual, 3-hour module offered each semester
Participants Receive: Certificate of completion, email signature graphic, swag items
Mental Health Ally Training
Play this simulated and interactive training experience designed specifically for CSULB faculty and staff. Participants practice empathy, active listening, and referral strategies through gamified scenarios that help build confidence supporting students in distress.
Format: Virtual, approximately 1 hour
Participants Receive: Certificate of completion, Ally sticker, T-Shirt and email signature graphic
Mental Health First Aid
Co-facilitated by Dr. Bonnie Gasior (CSULB), Dr. Darci Strother (CSUSM), and Professor Sailesh Maharjan (CSUSB)
An evidence-based certification course that teaches participants how to recognize, understand, and respond to someone experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge. The training uses real-world scenarios and skill-building activities to help participants confidently support someone in need.
Format: 2 hours asynchronous online work + 7 hours synchronous training over two days
Participants Receive: 3-year certification from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing

Department Lunch & Learn Presentations
Facilitated by Beach Wellness
A presentation designed for department meetings that introduces key campus resources that support student well-being and success. Faculty and staff learn how to identify when students may need support and how to make effective referrals.

Ability Ally Training
Facilitated by the Bob Murphy Access Center
Learn how to better support students with disabilities and create a more accessible learning environment. The training explores disability identity, accessibility, and ways to foster an equitable campus community.
Format: Hyflex, 2-hour session
Participants Receive: Ally sticker, certificate of completion, and access to a Canvas resource course
Autism Ally Training
Facilitated by the Bob Murphy Access Center
Learn how to create a more inclusive campus for autistic students. Participants are introduced to the LIFE Project (autism services through BMAC) and gain practical ways to support accessibility and belonging at CSULB.
Format: Virtual or In-Person, 2.5 hours

CSU Training: Becoming an Ally to the Undocumented Community
This CSU online training provides an introduction to the experiences of undocumented students and how campus communities can better support them. Participants learn about policies, challenges, and strategies for building a supportive campus environment.

CSULB UndocuAlly Training
Facilitated by the Dream Success Center
Develop the knowledge and skills to support undocumented students at CSULB. Participants explore immigration policy, student experiences, and campus resources that support student success.
Prerequisite: CSU Training – Becoming an Ally to the Undocumented Community
Format: In-Person, 2-hour session

VET NET Ally Awareness Training
Facilitated by Veteran Services
Learn about the experiences and needs of student veterans and how to foster a supportive campus environment. The training helps participants better understand military culture and strategies for supporting veteran student success.
