Long Beach, CA –The CSULB College of the Arts and Department of Dance present the Contemporary Dance Concert, an original program of eight live performances celebrating the choreographic expressions and diverse artistry of our undergraduate dance choreographers. Performances run Thursday, April 23rd – Friday, April 24th at 8 PM and Saturday April 25th at 2 PM and 8 PM in the Martha B. Knoebel Dance Theater on the CSULB campus. Tickets are $30 for general admission and $20 for seniors, students and CSULB faculty/staff.
Our annual showcase of student work features original dances by CSULB Dance undergraduates Colin Dean, Alexis Gutierrez, Isabella Ladine, Elisa Murray, Miriam Nguyen & Miguel Vasquez, Laney Patton & Kacey Ura, Maya Sabbah, and Dylan Shube. These ten talented choreographers have worked for over six months on deeply personal works that share a wide range of intentions and experiences. Their exciting new works range in style from street dance to narrative-based contemporary dance to improvisationally composed tap dance. Topics include the Japanese philosophical concept of Inyo (shadow and light), growth memory and change, the attempt to abandon ego and manufactured identities, and gender programming through the perspective of social media “GRWM” (get ready with me) videos.
Choreographers are collaborating with a wide array of talent adding to their creative visions including costumes by undergraduate designers Brooke Grayton, Kaleigh Herrera, and Malia Marchant, working under the tutelage of Costume Design Supervisor Kelsey Vidic and Costume Technician Erika Hansen. Dance makers also received mentorship from Dance faculty Rebecca Bryant, Rebecca Lemme, Danzel Thompson-Stout, Andrew Vaca, and Steve Zee.
